“Game of the year” – Fans go berserk as LA Lakers pull off the unthinkable 9-point deficit in less than 30 seconds against Joel Embiid, Sixers
Lakers and the 76ers battling for a rebound in the fourth quarter
The Los Angeles Lakers nearly pulled off a spectacular comeback victory in the final 30 seconds of regulation as Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers squandered a nine-point lead, forcing overtime but somehow prevailing after the end of the game. We got to see some frantic basketball action in that last half-minute as the Lakers and Sixers battled to hold off one other.
They lived true to that description in a matchup of two unreliable teams; each had significant miscues and moments of solid play, including the erratic last few minutes. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis rejoining the team on Friday night, the Lakers were essentially back in full force despite their ultimately dismal play. But in overtime, James Harden, Joel Embiid, and De’Anthony Melton took control of a nail-biting NBA game.
Prior to the overtime, the Lakers and Sixers went on to produce a string of plays which ultimately was a fun thing to watch. With two and a half minutes left in the game, the Lakers were down 12 points, but they came back thanks to key baskets and pricey Sixers fouls. With one minute remaining, James completed a three-point play to put the Lakers within two points (115-110), and Austin Reaves nailed a three with 12 seconds remaining.
Matisse Thybulle fouled Reaves on a 3-point attempt when he was behind 120-117; Reaves converted the first two free throws but missed the third. When Davis was fouled by Tobias Harris with 3.7 seconds left, he missed the first of two free throws to tie the score at 120 and force overtime. All this effort led to nothing as they ultimately failed to register the win.

Joel Embiid and the Sixers produce a dominant outing to defeat the Lakers
The 76ers returned from blowing a nine-point lead in the final 30 seconds of regulation to defeat Los Angeles 133-122 in overtime on Friday night thanks to Joel Embiid’s 38 points, 12 rebounds, and a career-high 33 points off the bench from De’Anthony Melton. James Harden had 28 points and 12 assists overall after scoring nine points in overtime.
With three steals, four 3-pointers, and six made shots in a 16-point third quarter, Melton had a career night along with seven steals and a total of eight made threes. With a 20-point first quarter, 8-of-9 shooting overall, two 3-pointers, and a crazy first half, Embiid stood out which helped the Sixers push.
LeBron James scored 23 points for the Lakers, while Anthony Davis scored 21 of his 31 total points in the fourth quarter and finished with 12 rebounds. James and Davis both missed Tuesday’s defeat in Toronto and returned against the 76ers. James persevered despite being injured, but he only made 9 of 22 shots and 7 of 8 3-point attempts.
Russell Westbrook joined Magic Johnson as the only Laker to have a triple-double off the bench with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. Lonnie Walker started the game and scored 15 points for the Lakers, and Austin Reaves added 25 points off the bench.

The Los Angeles Lakers had championship hopes going into the 2022–23 campaign. Instead, with more than a quarter of the season played, they are 5 games below.500, whereas the Sixers are also attempting to remain in the East race.
On January 15, Los Angeles and Philadelphia 76ers will play each other a second time. NBA fans may anticipate another thrilling matchup between two of the finest teams in the league if both teams and their players are in good health.
