“This response is alarming for multiple reasons” Jaylen Brown claps back at Brooklyn Nets UNWILLINGNESS to exempt Kyrie Irving from suspension
Kyrie Irving, Joe Tsai and Jaylen Brown
In reaction to Joe Tsai‘s most recent remarks regarding the availability of the All-Star point guard, Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown again defended Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving. In response to Tsai’s criticism and his hint that Irving might not be available even after the suspension, Brown posted a tweet denouncing the situation.
On Saturday, Kyrie Irving completed the fifth game of his minimum five-game suspension, and it appears like the Nets All-Star will remain out for Brooklyn’s road trip. Earlier this month, Irving faced criticism for posting a link to an anti-Semitic movie on his social media.
When offered the chance to clear up that he did not have any anti-Semitic ideas, Irving initially refused to apologize for saying so and brushed aside the question. The NBPA Vice President and Irving’s former teammate Jaylen Brown has been closely following the proceedings on this matter and commented on Joe Tsai’s latest reveal.
According to Brian Lewis of the New York Post, when asked if Irving would return for the team’s road trip, Tsai replied: “He still has work to do.” This is despite Irving’s productive meeting with Joe Tsai and his wife Clara this week and it appears that he is still dissatisfied with the way his point guard has behaved in the wake of this issue. But Jaylen Brown has his backing for Irving as he posted a cryptic tweet stating: “This response is alarming for multiple reasons.”
Jaylen Brown with his unwavering support for Kyrie Irving
Jaylen Brown had been backing Kyrie Irving from the moment he apologized for his conduct. Brown stated he does not think Irving is antisemitic in a Boston Globe Sports interview, adding that: “He made a mistake. He posted something. There was no distinction. Maybe we can move forward, but the terms in which he has to fulfill to return, we didn’t agree with the terms that was required for him to come back and we’re waiting for this Tuesday meeting to happen to see what comes of it.”
According to Brown, the Players Association is worried that Irving received an arbitrary and harsh punishment because there are no rules in place for a circumstance like this. “The terms for his return, they seem like a lot, and a lot of the players expressed discomfort with the terms,” Brown added. Brown also thought Nike co-founder Phil Knight‘s remarks were hypocritical, and on Thursday afternoon he asked “Since when did Nike care about ethics?” in a tweet.
As he should, Jaylen Brown takes great satisfaction in his social efforts and inclusive approach. But it appears he will lose the argument for supporting Kyrie Irving in this specific situation. Upon rejoining the squad, Irving is given a list of six tasks to perform and it seems Joe Tsai wants to hold Irving to that deadline. It’s uncertain where he is on that list and some league members think it was made with the hope that he wouldn’t finish it, opening the door to his release. We are currently playing a waiting game to watch how Kyrie’s scenario plays out.
