As the NBA off-season has started for most teams, there is a wave of shifts and changes for the next season. Teams are looking to rebuild as some are changing the coaching staff while others are reported to trading players. The Philadelphia 76ers are no different. After their Conference Semi-Finals loss to the Boston Celtics, many expected the franchise to pursue ambitious changes in the staff and roster for the next season.
According to recent reports, former Toronto Raptors Head Coach Nick Nurse is interested in taking up the Head Coach job for the 76ers. After Philadelphia fired Doc Rivers after their elimination from the playoffs, the position has been vacant and up for grabs. Although the front-running players, Joel Embiid and James Harden, might dictate who ends up getting it, Nurse might just be the perfect fit after all.
“A source has confirmed that Nurse pulled out of being considered for the Milwaukee Bucks head-coaching job, leading to the team hiring his former Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin on Saturday. Nurse interviewed with the Sixers on Monday before meeting with the Suns on Thursday. The 55-year-old coach is pondering the best destination for him, according to sources. However, a source would not say if the Sixers offered him the gig.” reported Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inqurier.
According to reports, Nick Nurse’s prime interest in the Philadelphia 76ers comes due to Daryl Morey. Morey was the General Manager of the Houston Rockets when Nurse was the coach of their G-League team, the Rio Grand Valley Vipers.
Has Nick Nurse found success as a Head Coach?
Nick Nurse was initially an assistant coach under Dwayne Casey in Toronto. However, he rose to the Head Coach position in 2018, ahead of the 2018-19 NBA season. Nurse coached the Toronto Raptors magnificently as they won their first NBA Championship that season. To make that victory even more special was the fact that they dominated the mighty Golden State Warriors, who were the most dominating team during those years.
Following the Raptor’s success, Nurse was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2020. There’s no doubt that Nurse has had the experience of coaching an aspiring team to win a championship. With the Philadelphia 76ers missing out by margins every year, Nurse might be the Head Coach they need after all.
