Kevin Durant’s trade to the Phoenix Suns was one of the biggest blockbuster deals in the league this season. When the human sniper demanded a trade in the offseason, it was pretty much clear that he would leave the team fairly soon. According to sources, Durant approved the Suns’ offer as soon as he got it since Kyrie Irving had already been traded. ESPN Insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported that he looked at the Suns’ roster and assessed what it would look like with his addition.

According to Wojnarowski, the Suns were working on a deal to bring John Collins to town. However, when Durant’s opportunity came up, Suns owner Mat Ishbia seized it. “Phoenix in the evening was fairly serious and engaged in doing a three-team deal that would have potentially landed them John Collins from Atlanta. But it got to a point last night where the Phoenix saw the opportunity, Mat Ishbia, the new owner…went to distance, 11 at midnight,” Wojnarowski said. Durant reportedly expressed an interest in the Boston Celtics as well. He saw the Suns’ deal, however, and saw what they would look like with him on the floor. “He looked at what the Suns Deal was, what that trade would be, and still wanted to go.”

According to ESPN’s ranking of teams predicted to win the championship this year, the Suns have taken a significant step forward in their championship prospects. That’s what happens when you add a guy of Durant’s quality to your squad. A player and leader like him is bound to help a team achieve success.

A lot of success of the Suns depends upon how Kevin Durant gels with the team and the star players like Chris Paul and Devin Booker. So far, in the last few seasons, they made it to the playoffs and eventually to the NBA finals without a player of KD’s caliber. The Suns, without him, were already a good team, and adding a superstar like him has made them one of the favorites to win the title.

However, other factors must be considered while assessing the Suns’ prospects. Durant has experienced a slew of injuries since rupturing his Achilles. He recently injured his second MCL. Chris Paul, on the other hand, is 37 years old. While he has been a leader on and off the court, he has been showing signs of slowing down. So far, with that talent, this team is either a championship team or a bust.
