Dallas Mavericks didn’t make it to the playoffs and Kyrie Irving has been nowhere near the court for quite some time. But still, he lives rent free in the heads of Boston Celtics fans who can’t seem to get over him. Irving and Celtics parted ways in 2019 following which Irving went to the Nets for four seasons. He was then traded to the Dallas Mavericks upon his request and had surprisingly good chemistry with Luka Doncic.
Despite the world moving on from the controversial trade in 2019, the Celtics fans clearly haven’t. They seem to be stuck right where Irving left off, and now they resort to ridiculous methods of comparison. An NBA Fan was spotted donning a weird T-shirt during Game 5 between the Celtics and Miami Heat. The T-shirt read, “Putin, ISIS, Kim Jong Un, Kyrie,” seemingly trying to draw a comparison between these four individuals.
While ISIS is one of the most notorious terrorist organizations in the world, Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin are controversial leaders of North Korea and Russia, respectively. Kyrie Irving, on the other hand, is a basketball player, no matter how controversial. The Celtics fan chose to “stay classy” with the T-shirt and seemingly tried to make a “point”. Even though no one knew what the point was. Take a look at some of the reactions fans had to this T-shirt on Twitter.
Despite the bitter partnership between the Celtics and Irving ending in 2019, some moments still irk Celtics fans. So where did this rivalry begin and what did Kyrie Irving do to anger the Celtics fans off?
Boston and Kyrie Irving’s rivalry
Kyrie Irving’s trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics was deemed as a failure for both the teams. Shortly after winning the championship alongside LeBron James in the year 2016, Irving’s desire to change teams surfaced. The Cavaliers acquiesced to Kyrie’s plea and traded the All-Star to the Boston Celtics. In return, they received guard Isaiah Thomas, forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic, and the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first-round pick without any protection.
Irving’s tenure in Boston was filled with ups and downs. In his first year with the team, they experienced a disappointing loss in the Eastern Conference Finals. While he repeatedly assured the fans and management that he would commit to a long-term extension with the Celtics, Irving ultimately surprised everyone by departing the team in free agency during the summer of 2019.
Before his departure in free agency, there was noticeable tension within the organization and the locker room. Kyrie Irving didn’t quite fit in with players like Jayson Tatum and Gordon Hayward, nor did he fully embrace the team’s style of play. Consequently, Irving made the decision to “jump ship” and sought what he believed to be a better situation by joining forces with Kevin Durant on the Brooklyn Nets. Irving was also spotted stomping the Boston Celtics logo in his “final game” in the arena.
While Irving agreed to “embracing the dark side” of his rivalry with the Celtics fans, things never were right for both parties. Whenever Irving played at TD Garden, he was greeted with expletives and boos. It feels as if things will never be the same between both the parties and NBA Fans will have to live with the same.
