“They need an Anthony Davis or Evan Mobley,” Nick Wright compares Luka Doncic’s Dallas Mavericks to LeBron James’ time with Cavs
Luka Doncic and Nick Wright
Luka Doncic has been in the conversation for the best player in the league this season. Along with Jayson Tatum and Giannis Antetokounmpo, Doncic has been one of the leading candidates for the regular season MVP award. Despite heroic performances from the Slovenian star, the Dallas Mavericks have not been able to have a great season for themselves so far.
Many NBA analysts believe that Doncic needs another star player, who can not only share the responsibility on the offensive end but also can take care of the ball when Luka is not on the court. One of the recent moves to give Luka more rest on the bench has been the addition of former Hornets star Kemba Walker. However, not only Walker is a defensive liability but also if he can bring that offense alongside Luka is a bigger question that still needs figuring out by the Mavs.
In a recent interview NBA analyst Nick Wright drew an interesting comparison between Luka’s Mavericks and LeBron James’ led Cavaliers when he arrived in Cleveland. Speaking of Mavericks’ condition Wright said, “They are in a really tough spot and they remind a little too much of the Cavs the first time LeBron was there. Where this guy is so good and they can’t build the right team around him.”
Breaking Luka Doncic’s Mavericks right now is not a good idea according to Nick Wright
When asked if the Mavericks should tear down the roster, Nick replied, “You can’t tear it down.” According to Wright, the Western Conference is wide open and the Mavs still have a chance to make it to the finals. “The West so wide open…. Kawhi doesn’t play basketball anymore, the Lakers are gonna be happy to just get into the playoffs,” Wright remarked. It is only the Golden State Warriors that pose a real threat to Doncic and the Mavericks right now.
If anything Doncic needs right now is an addition of a great tall defensive player in his team to get over the hump. “They need another…. unique player. They need an Anthony Davis or an Even Mobley, a great defensive player, that’s good around the ring. That doesn’t need the ball.” Since these kinds of guys are hard to find in the market right now, according to Nick, “those guys are hard to come by” especially at this point of the season.
The Mavs would have the upper hand in the playoffs series against almost every team in the playoffs. Even the Denver Nuggets right now are hardly better than Luka’s Mavericks according to Wright. The analyst also believes that the Mavs would have the best player on the floor in every single game unless they face the Bucks in the finals. Hence breaking them at this point of the season would not be a good idea.
