Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant are one of the greatest duos ever to step on a basketball court. Both the superstars are Hall of Famers and legends of the game. When they were balling out together at the Los Angeles Lakers. They led the Hollywood-based team to three championships and are the last team to three-peat in the league. But they weren’t really the leaders as it was Legendary Head Coach Phil Jackson who was getting the job done through them.

Phil Jackson is the smartest and one of the greatest coaches out there. He is the reason behind the success of some generational talents like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Scottie Pippen. In his coaching career, he won 11 NBA Championships and made it to the list of Top 10 coaches in NBA History. Phil wasn’t just any coach out there who wants his team to win every time they are on the floor.

Phil Jackson was a very smart, wise and genuine guy who has things planned beforehand and had a very unique and different perspective for getting various things done- like using weed or the cousin of weed in the team’s theatre. Many won’t believe this but we have Shaquille O’Neal who spent some quality time around Phil, claiming him to use weed.

Shaquille O’Neal from day one was under the wing of Phil Jackson. And, also Big Diesel was one of the very first guys from the Lakers’ franchise who wanted the Zen Master on board. He was disciplined and had his head down knowing PJ can lead him and the Los Angeles Lakers to multiple championships. So when Shaquille O’Neal himself is claiming about an illegal act he caught Phil Jackson doing, it can’t really be all wrong.

Shaquille O’Neal revealed this wild story of Phil Jackson in his book: “Shaq Uncut: Tall Tales and Untold Stories.” It really is a tall tale and an untold story that is hard to believe. Shaq in his book has mentioned how growing up in the hood had him knowing what weed smelled like and how he smelled the exact same thing while meditating with the team or being in the team’s theatre. As Phil Jackson would burn something in the corner. Which the Head Coach always denied to be weed but sage.

Shaq in his book wrote: “Phil was definitely a different sort of cat. He was into his Zen mode a lot. Being from the ’hood, I knew what certain drugs smelled like—weed, for instance. Phil wanted us to meditate, so he’d put us in a room and dim the lights and he’d burn sage. It smelled like weed. We’d call him on it and he’d tell us, “No, it’s not weed. It’s the cousin of weed.”

Shaquille O’Neal has also given a detailed explanation about the whole process in his book. As he has also mentioned: “We had this fifteen-seat theater at the practice facility, and he’d start pounding this Indian drum. When he hit that thing, it meant “Get your a** to the theatre.”…  Once we got in the theatre he’d turn out the lights and it would be pitch black. So here comes the weed—oh, sorry Phil, the “cousin of weed”—and then he’d tell us to lean back in our chairs and relax…”

Shaquille O’Neal also mentioned how the doo-doo sound of the Indian drum was a serious warning for everyone to get in the theatre. But still, there aren’t any solid evidences about Zen Master using weed and not the cousin of weed around the team for them to get relaxed. As Phil Jackson has always denied that and also now it doesn’t really matters. As whatever he was burning it worked well for the team as he led them to nothing but straight success.
