To no one’s surprise, Dak Prescott had yet another below-average season last year. In the 12 games he started under center for the Dallas Cowboys, Prescott went 8-4 and threw for 2,860 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Prescott led the league in interceptions last year which was one of the reasons for the underperformed Cowboys offense.

Dak Prescott’s turnovers became a big problem for the Cowboys but head coach Mike McCarthy said during the league’s annual meeting that that problem won’t be repeated in the 2023 season. “Definitely, we spent some time,” McCarthy said via Dallas’ official website. “He was in for the captains workout (earlier this month). So he came up and spent about four hours with (quarterbacks coach) Scott (Tolzien) and I. And we went back and looked at his decision-making opportunities and the interceptions and potential interceptions and just talking through it.”

While this might sound like a piece of good news for the Cowboys fans, they know not to hold their breath for the team making a comeback and Prescott being a stalwart signal-caller because they have been hurt before. Dallas will be a completely different offense in the coming season and will be more focused on the running game rather than having Dak Prescott throw the ball for the majority of the game.

The Cowboys released their star running back Ezekiel Elliott and tagged Tony Pollard. This move by the team in free agency points towards them creating a stronghold in the backfield. Dallas is most likely to sign a running back in the first round. Their offense won’t be as explosive as before but at least Prescott won’t turn the ball twice in every game he starts.

Colin Cowherd believes Dak Prescott can’t pull victories for the Cowboys

NFL analysts Colin Cowherd on his show The Herd said Dak Prescott shouldn’t be trusted because he can’t pull wins for the team. Cowherd said, “The data doesn’t lie. The more you ask of Dak, the more mistakes he makes and the fewer times he wins. If you ask him to throw 35 of more times because he doesn’t have a reliable run game. He loses.”

“If yo ask him to throw under 35 times, because you have a very effective run game. He wins. He doesn’t pull you to a win he can help guide you there as others pull you there.” Dak Prescott had 394 passing attempts last year which led to him throwing the most interceptions in the league. To cut down on those turnovers, the Cowboys fired Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore who heavily relied on Prescott throwing the ball, and brought in Brian Schottenheimer who likes to run the ball rather than throw it in the air.

This kind of shows a distrust in their quarterback as they don’t believe he can throw fewer interceptions if given the ball in his hands. In the end, if the Cowboys are winning games this way, then the credit will also go to Prescott well because the quarterback gets most of the glory for winning games in the NFL.

Talking about Prescott missing games due to injuries, Mike McCarthy said he wants the 29-year-old to play 20 games next season. “If he plays 20 games next year, obviously, we’ll be right where we want to be,” the coach said. Let’s see if the changes made by the Cowboys help them overcome 28 year NFC Championship game drought or does history repeats itself in 2023 as well.
