Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has spoken about the historic feat he will achieve with Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl LVII. The 2023 Super Bowl will be the first ever to feature two Black starting QBs- Jalen Hurts for the Philadelphia Eagles and Patrick Mahomes for the Kansas City Chiefs. Including Hurts, only 8 Black men have ever started as QB in the NFL’s rich history.

Hurts recently spoke to the media about this historic situation and addressed how special and vital will be in the longer run. He said that the occasion is historic and for this to happen, everyone has come a long way. He said that there have been only eight African-American quarterbacks who’ve played the Super Bowl and hence, to be the first for something is very cool.

“It is history. It’s come a long way. I think there have only been (eight) African American quarterbacks to play in a Super Bowl. To be the first for something is pretty cool. I know it’ll be a good one. It’s history,” Hurts said.

Hurts will become the eighth Black QB in NFL history to start in the Super Bowl. These trailblazers are- Doug Williams, Steve McNair, Donovan McNabb, Colin Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Patrick Mahomes, and Jalen Hurts. Out of these, only Williams, Wilson, and Mahomes have won a Super Bowl and Hurts will look to become the 4th Black QB ever to do so in Arizona.

Andy Reid also gave his two cents on the topic and, contrary to everyone, believed that the color of the skin shouldn’t be a thing to factor in. He said that the biggest thing is that both Hurts and Mahomes are very good. He obviously said that it is important to celebrate this ‘unique’ feat, but he doesn’t care what color the player is. He said that the QB position takes a lot of effort and if you’re playing in the Super Bowl, you’re definitely good at it.

“The biggest thing is they are really good. I think it’s a tribute to (Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts). That’s unique. It is unique. I don’t ever look at it that way. I look at, I don’t really care what color you are. You are a good player. At that position, it takes a tremendous amount of time and effort. I can really appreciate that. I’ve never been one to look at the color part of it,” Reid said.

On February 12, the Kansas City Chiefs will play the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. The Eagles, led by Jalen Hurts, will look to win their second Super Bowl ring.
