Looks like Sauce Gardner’s fondness for his alma mater remains intact, despite the Cincinnati Bearcats’ poor performance this season. And his fondness is what made him the subject of a recent social media controversy.
Sauce Gardner, a former player on the University of Cincinnati football team, began his NFL journey with the New York Jets after being drafted in 2022. He has had an impressive career in the NFL so far, as he was titled the 2022 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.
However, recently Cincinnati’s alma mater picked Cincinnati and Wisconsin Badgers as the top 3 college football teams, besides Michigan Wolverines, which sparked a debate all over the social media. Although it’s not unusual for athletes to have special preferences and fondness toward their college football teams, Gardner’s comment met criticism considering the current ranking of these teams.
This season, in the Big 12 ranking, Cincinnati is ranked at the very bottom, standing at a 3-9 overall record and a 1-8 conference record. Wisconsin is ranked third in Big 10 West with a standing of 7-5 overall and 5-4 conference record.
Fan reaction to Sauce Gardner’s comment on Cincinnati and Wisconsin as the best college football team
Even though most of the NFL players expressed their support for their alma mater, what got fans upset was blind support by Gardner. They have been trolling the young athletes for calling Cincinnati and Wisconsin the best college teams when the numbers are clearly against them.
Fans are, in fact, comparing the Jets’ position in the NFL and how slim their odds are for playoffs. Many are saying the cornerback is high that’s why he isn’t talking in his senses. Though Michigan sure has high rankings and deserves the best football team title, Cincinnati and Wisconsin aren’t even near it. One fan wrote, “Stay off the weed!” while another wrote, “Saying Wisconsin is like saying the Jets are a playoff team” with laughing emojis. A fan even ranked four cornerbacks in the league who are better than Gardner, naming, “1. Devon Witherspoon 2. Riq woolen 3. Tre Brown 4. Coby Bryant.”
Mostly, fans are making fun of the young athlete for his highly biased opinion, suggesting he get rest.
