If anyone thought that Philadelphia Flyers coach John Tortorella has mellowed down a bit, then they were gravely mistaken. Undoubtedly his fiery temper has been taken a notch down, but it is during times like these that he instinctively lashes out. Over the years he has taken control of his temper, but when he speaks, NHL listens.
The timings that the media reporters took to ask questions weren’t ideal. This season the Flyers have won just 8 of their first 25 regular-season games, along with their recent 3-2 loss against New Jersey Devils. It wasn’t the time to anger Torts, but unfortunately, the media did, and go what was expected.
Tortorella stormed out of the meeting after saying his bit and “Thank you”. He didn’t wait for any further questions to be asked. He was plenty irritated after his team’s loss. Saturday’s post-game interview called upon relatively generic questions, which frustrated the Flyers coach even more.

One reporter asked, “What in your evaluation was the reason for the loss?”, to which John Tortorella replied smilingly, “I’ll leave that alone”. His second question from the interviewer was the last straw that cut off Torts’ desperate temper control. The interviewer questioned, “Are you happy with the effort tonight?”
According to HockeyFeed.com, a frustrated and tired Torts calming replied, “Yes”. “You’re asking me dumb questions guys, really dumb questions, jesus. We played our ass off.” Torts response wasn’t unprecedented at all. The team’s streak of losing has worn off the coach, and he also had to stand off from answering interview questions.
His storming off from the podium was a result of all his frustration. It’s not common to see reporters being told off like that, but the person standing in front being Torts, chances all possibilities. Even earlier the week, Torts called NHL “Yeah…it’s a dumb young league”.
He stated that the players are making silly mistakes that could be easily avoided. Considering how much the League has changed its rules, the number of mistakes and game calls are yet to die down. He even stated that it may be due to players having less experience, which wasn’t a problem in the past.
“Coaches, we’ve evolved, I think you have to because I used to be that ‘dot the i, cross the t’ and forecast what the game was going to be before it’s played.” “Now I think you need to allow them to live through some of those mistakes for them to mature.”
“It’s so sensitive nowadays as far as how you can lean on a player and the expectations are”. “You have to coach people differently, but I think it’s our job to push athletes to areas that they’re not comfortable and to make them better.”
