In Short
  • Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons face elimination after a 94-88 loss to the Orlando Magic, trailing 3-1 in the series.
  • Nick Wright criticized the Pistons' performance, labeling the situation a "catastrophe" given their strong regular season record of 60-22.
  • Cunningham has been impressive but has struggled with turnovers, averaging 6.8 per game, which has hindered the team's performance in the playoffs.

It appears that Cade Cunningham‘s and the Detroit Pistons’ 2025-26 campaign may come to an end sooner than expected. The Pistons suffered a disappointing 94-88 defeat to the Orlando Magic in Game 4 at the Kia Center on Monday night. The loss has put them on the brink of getting eliminated in the first round as they find themselves 3-1 down in the series.

After the loss, sports analyst Nick Wright called out the Pistons in what could be a disappointing end to their 2025-26 campaign.

What a total catastrophe this has been for the Pistons. Even if you didn’t think they were quite as good as their record & were maybe even the 3rd or 4th most likely team to come out of the East, I can’t imagine *anyone* saw this coming 10 days ago.

Nick Wright on X

Nick Wright has been in the spotlight lately for his spat with the Ball family. The Fox Sports analyst is known for being vocal about his opinions, and he left no stone unturned after the Pistons’ loss in Game 4. It is hard to argue against Wright’s statements after the season the Pistons have had. In a wide-open Eastern Conference, the Pistons would have fancied their chances this year.

The Pistons are coming off their best regular season in a long time. They sat at the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 60-22 record. Their 60-22 record was the third best in the league after the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the San Antonio Spurs.

Despite the Pistons having a strong regular season, there were doubts about the team going far in the postseason due to their lack of playoff experience and not having an established secondary scorer after Cade Cunningham.

While Cunningham has been impressive in this series, he has had little to no help from his teammates. The lack of a secondary option in the playoffs has been a major concern for the Pistons, which has now left them in a tight spot.

Detroit Pistons struggle when Cade Cunningham is on the bench

When Cade Cunningham suffered a collapsed lung, Jalen Duren stepped up in his absence. Cunningham was sidelined for three weeks, and during his absence, the Pistons went 8-3 in their 11 games. It looked like the Pistons finally had their secondary option.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case in the Magic series. While Cunningham has averaged 29.5 points in the four games, Duren is averaging just 9.8 points in the series, highlighting his lack of aggression.

After the match, former NBA player Chandler Parsons said that the Pistons are exposed when their star player is on the bench.

Jalen Duren is their 2nd best player, but he’s not a 2nd option… Payton Pritchard, CJ McCollum will break you off. They don’t have that guy compliments Cade.

The 60-win regular season doesn’t matter much now as they are now 3-1 down to an eighth-seeded team. Only six number eight seeds have defeated a number one seed in a playoff series in NBA history. The Pistons will be looking for inspiration from their 2003 postseason when they mounted a comeback from 3-1 down against the same opponents in the first round.

Turnovers have been an issue for Cade Cunningham

There is no doubt that Cade Cunningham has elevated himself as one of the best point guards in the league this season. His performances this season even earned him MVP shouts. While he has averaged impressive numbers in this series, Cunningham has been guilty of committing too many turnovers.

In the four games, the Pistons guard has averaged 29.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists. However, after Monday night, he set a new playoff record for most turnovers over a three-game span in NBA history as he overtook James Harden with 24 turnovers.

Following the loss, Cunningham took the blame for the team’s high number of turnovers.

It all starts with me. I’ve got to be better about organizing us and making sure we’re getting shots on the rim.

Cunningham is averaging 6.8 turnovers in this series. While his teammates have struggled to step up and reduce his scoring burden, the Pistons cannot afford their star player to turn the ball over so many times.
