Over the last few months, the topic regarding the ban on the involvement of trans athletes in women’s sports has been the trending topic. During this course, the name Riley Gaines has resounded time and time again. The former NCAA swimmer has become a focal point in this fight. She has carried on to assault the officials verbally on this matter.
On Wednesday, while appearing to testify, Gaines once again made sure her voice is heard. While speaking before the Senate on the hearing of “Protecting Pride: Defending the Civil Rights of LGBTQ+ Americans,” she shared her experience with Lia Thomas. Gaines further highlighted the “biological advantage,” Thomas and other trans athletes have while competing against women.
The “biological advantage” issue regarding male athletes has been on the surge. Several trans athletes have faced the heat from users for their “unfair” participation in these events. At the hearing, Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights campaign, used the name of Serena Williams. She claimed that the tennis great could defeat any man in the sport.
“There’s been this news article about men that think they can beat Serena Williams in tennis,” Robinson stated before adding that it’s not the case as she (Williams) is stronger than them. Gaines would calmly shut her down and mentioned that both the Williams sisters lost to the 203rd-ranked male player.
Gaines slams NCAA and Lia Thomas in latest hearing
One reason the ban on transgender athletes has been on the rise is the proposed Title IX changes. The Joe Biden administration earlier informed that they will be bringing in some changes to it. Lia Thomas, the first trans champion of the NCAA has continuously pushed for these changes to be implemented. Thomas earlier claimed that her fellow participants who did not support her were “transphobic feminists.”
This statement by her was heard in the hearing. Reacting to this, Riley Gaines slammed the NCAA for allowing her (Thomas) to take part in the first place. She mentioned that she has no animosity towards Thomas. “My problem is the NCAA. My problem is the Biden administration pushing a rewrite of Title IX, that’s why I am here,” Gaines said in her defense.
Just a day before, Gaines had mocked the Harvard University for sending a message to their swim team in regards to Thomas. The trans athlete has earlier criticized Gaines for becoming an advocate for women. Thomas had publicly alleged that Gaines is using this as a cover to spread transphobia in connection with trans athletes. “This is a man mansplaining what it is to be a feminist,” Gaines reacted.
In the hearing, she also recalled the traumatic experiences of sharing a locker room with Thomas and the attack by an angry mob. What consequences will this meeting lead to will be interesting to see? The ex-Kentucky athlete had earlier urged fellow female participants for a complete boycott if trans athletes are allowed.
