Amid a win, the Kansas City Chiefs locker room is in the dumps after the unintentional and unfortunate accident on the field involving two top players. The smallest silver lining is only one of them was injured in the process.
The Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wide receiver Rashee Rice were running at full speed to the Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton amid an interception return. Mahomes and Rice collided with the latter suffering instant damage to his knees—the right one looked hyperextended after the incident.
Speaking after the match, Mahomes had a five-word initial response when asked about the incident. He explained that the play didn’t go as he expected and rolled off on Rice causing the incident.
Immediately after the play, Rice limped to the bench with the help of two trainers. The second-year wideout visibly struggled to put weight on his right leg on the sideline. After speaking with a trainer, Rice left the field lying down on a cart.
The 24-year-old from Philadelphia held his head in his hands as the cart moved off the field. The official picture will only be revealed on Monday after detailed scanning.
In addition to the injury, the hearings from his involvement in the multiple-car collision loom. Rice and SMU footballer Teddy Knox drove a Lamborghini Urus and Corvette, respectively, trying to maneuver through traffic at high speeds. The duo also didn’t stop to check on the injured individuals after the collision. Although the case has been pulled back, Rice also had an assault allegation in a club around the same time.
Travis Kelce stepped up in Rashee Rice’s absence
After struggling in the first three weeks of the current NFL Season, Travis Kelce has found his rhythm back. As the Chiefs are lacking Rice on top of Hollywood Brown and Isaiah Pacheco, Kelce coming back to his form is a welcome surprise.
In his first three games, he only had 69 receiving yards while he recorded 89 yards for seven receptions and nine targets on Sunday. Although Xavier Worthy had the only receiving TD in the game, it was ultimately Kelce who shone brighter. He also bested Tony Gonzalez’s record to become Kansas City’s player with most receptions.
Kelce has 922 receptions in his name since being drafted in 2013. Among active players, only DeAndre Hopkins has more receptions in the NFL than Travis Kelce.
In the all-time career receptions list, Hopkins is 21st and Kelce is 23rd. Kelce leads the NFL in career post-season receptions with 165 to his name. With a striking performance today, Kelce also put rest to allegations of Taylor Swift being a distraction to the tight end.
