- Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are competing for the starting quarterback position for the Cleveland Browns.
- Browns GM Andrew Berry stated that no quarterback currently has an advantage in the competition.
- Mary Kay Cabot reported that Watson has emerged with an edge over Sanders, causing controversy among fans.
All the noise from the Cleveland Browns’ camp has been about the battle between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders to become the starting quarterback come Week 1.
Dillon Gabriel, the third signal caller on their roster, has seemingly fizzled out with his training camp interceptions. That has led the spotlight to focus on the other two from that room.
Sure, there is the veteran’s albatross of a contract, which makes it very clear that the franchise has to work with him this year before they can think about his future next offseason.
However, the Browns have been reiterating that Watson’s millions will not decide who starts in Week 1. This gave Sanders’ fans hope that if he performs well, he would get the nod.
New head coach Todd Monken has also clarified that he wants to give both QBs a good chance to fight for the spot, and so far, both QBs have been doing just that.
We’ve preached competition since we’ve been here… We’re looking for performance… I expect him (Shedeur) to have more command of offense.
Andrew Berry said
This was the GM’s response to the quarterback battle. After this answer, the ESPN Cleveland Radio host asked Andrew Berry whether Deshaun Watson was ahead of Shedeur Sanders in the race to become QB1.
I don’t know that any player has an advantage. I think certainly, experience helps. I wouldn’t say that in itself gives any player an advantage.

From his answer, it is clear that despite having more experience, the Clemson alum does not have an advantage so far over his younger fellow QB.
Reporter claimed Deshaun Watson had edge over Shedeur Sanders
While Andrew Berry was specific when stating that no quarterback had the edge over the other, longtime Cleveland Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot had something else to say:

Deshaun Watson emerged from the Browns’ voluntary minicamp last week with an edge over Shedeur Sanders in the two-man quarterback competition — and has the inside track to be named the Browns QB1, sources tell cleveland.com.
Mary Kay Cabot revealed
Considering her 27 years of experience exclusively covering the franchise, this news naturally drew everyone’s attention. That is why the ESPN Cleveland radio host asked Berry about it.
Cabot’s revelation caused a furor among Shedeur Sanders’ fans, who felt that the Browns were becoming a laughing stock, handing the offense’s reins to a certain Deshaun Watson, who has been nothing but a disappointment.
On top of that, Mary Kay Cabot stressed that Shedeur Sanders only has six weeks to win back the QB1 job before head coach Todd Monken makes it official. Naturally, such claims would cause an uproar that the Browns are currently facing.
Robert Griffin III shades Shedeur Sanders’ haters
While Shedeur Sanders’ fans were angry at Mary Kay Cabot’s revelation, others were there to rejoice in the fact that the Colorado Buffaloes alum had lost out in the QB1 race.
Some people want anyone but Sheduer Sanders to be the starting QB in Cleveland. Makes zero sense. Let the young man compete and put the agendas against him and his family away.
Robert Griffin III wrote on X
The former Heisman Trophy winner flamed the ‘haters’ who have been trying to malign Sanders and his family since the signal-caller made his name in Colorado.

Robert Griffin III believes that the ‘hate’ is such that they would be happy for anyone to get the QB1 job over the 24-year-old. They do not care that he is a Pro Bowler or that his impressive performances last season helped the franchise win more games than with other QBs. All they want is to criticize him.
