Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer has made some predictions about Novak Djokovic‘s chances at the Australian Open. The Serbian has been unclear about his future in the game but insists on playing for Serbia and focusing on Grand Slams.
Federer, who has shared the court with Djokovic in the biggest stadiums in the world, believes that the 24-time Grand Slam champion cannot be written off. He credited Djokovic for overcoming his injury concerns to win the Olympic gold medal in Paris.
Novak, winning the Olympics and playing somewhat let’s say a full season – he didn’t bow out because of injuries, he chose to play less which is normal when you get a bit older. I feel like he has chances moving forward. I look forward to Australia which is the next Slam. I think he’s definitely going to be one of the favourites along with Sinner and Alcaraz. I think the Australian Open story will be a very cool one to follow.Roger Federrer told the reports ahead of Laver Cup 2024 (H/T: Tennis365)
Federer and Djokovic have strong sentiments regarding the Australian Open. The duo has won 16 Australian Open titles combined since 2004 and has played each other five times in Melbourne. However, Djokovic’s invincibility in Australia was halted by Jannik Sinner this year. The Italian defeated the current World No. 4 in four sets en route to his first Grand Slam title down under.
Roger Federer shows concern about Rafael Nadal’s future
Roger Federer has expressed concerns about his long-term rival Rafael Nadal and the Spaniard’s future in the game. The left-hander has not been in action since losing in both the men’s singles and doubles matches at the Paris Olympics.
With Rafa we don’t know – it remains to be seen. It’s hard for me to make a prediction on Rafa because of the little tennis he has played this year.Roger Federer told the reporters
Federer traveled to New York recently, where he was seen making his return to the US Open for the first time since his retirement. On the Today Show, he offered a few hints about Nadal’s future. He insisted that he had a conversation with the 22-time Grand Slam champion but believes Nadal has the full authority to “do what he wants.”
Just a few days later, Nadal withdrew from the Laver Cup, where many predicted he might announce his retirement. Ironically, the Laver Cup was the tournament where Federer retired in 2022 after playing his last doubles match with Nadal.
Nadal was replaced by Grigor Dimitrov in Team Europe for this year’s Berlin Edition. There are no clear indicators about where Nadal will play next, but there are rumors regarding a potential career-ending appearance with the Spain Davis Cup team.
