Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is making sure he has the last word on Dillon Brooks after their recent series in the playoffs. The Thunder came out on top as they completed a 4-0 sweep of the Phoenix Suns in the first round. SGA delivered a solid 37-point performance in Game 4 as the Thunder recorded a 131-122 victory to close out the series.

The reigning MVP took to social media and posted a direct shot at his Canadian teammate. It was an edited image that said “Cancun on 3” behind Brooks’ jersey. In the caption, SGA wrote:

Everybody wants to be villainous until the brooms come out and the dust settles and you realize who the villain is.

Brooks, being the personality that he is, didn’t hold back and commented:

Sounds like a ghost writer- The Villain.

The series win saw the Thunder become the first and only team to record a clean sweep in the first round of the playoffs this year. While it was an easy win for the defending champions, it did have its fair share of drama.

The main talking point before the series started was the matchup between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks. The two share a good relationship with one another as they are teammates at the international level, but there was no love lost between the two during this series.

There is no animosity between the two stars. The recent back-and-forth on social media is just two good friends engaging in some friendly banter. In the end, both players had a good series overall.

The banter of Instagram between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks was friendly and not personal. However, that has not stopped Brooks from taking it a bit further. After commenting on SGA’s post, he changed his Instagram bio to read “Villain or vigilante?”.

Brooks has embraced the “villain” tag over the last few years. He has been involved in heated exchanges with several superstars in the league, including LeBron James.

Brooks loves being petty. But he has shown a lot of improvement in his game this season. The Suns forward has been a culture setter and may have a future with the franchise.

Earlier this year, Suns owner Mat Ishbia made it public that Brooks will not be traded. Always known for his defensive prowess, the 30-year-old had the best scoring season of his career. This season, he averaged 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 56 appearances.

Prior to the 2025-26 campaign, there weren’t many hopes on the Suns after they traded Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal in the offseason. But the club led by Brooks surprised everyone as they finished at seventh place in the Western Conference standings.

They made it to the playoffs as the eighth seed after beating the Golden State Warriors in the Play-In Tournament. But a seven-game series against the Thunder was a lot to expect, despite Brooks playing very well.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder deliver a statement to the league

In the 2025-26 regular season, the Thunder topped the Western Conference standings with a 64-18 record. Their 64-win campaign was the best record in the league this season. Therefore, heading into the postseason, they were seen as the favorites to win the championship once again.

MVP candidate, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, was coming off another historic regular season. The 27-year-old showed no signs of slowing down in the first round. Despite Brooks playing some solid defense, SGA averaged 33.8 points in the series.

The Thunder dominated the Suns from start to finish and are the only team to close out a series in four games. With a few extra days of rest, the Thunder will be up and ready to take to the court in the next round. They are likely to face the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals as the Lakers currently have a 3-1 lead over the Houston Rockets.
