A few days ago, Sophie Cunningham, Caitlin Clark, and the rest of the Indiana Fever met for nearly two hours to have a deep discussion about the state of the team.
This came about after they lost two games in a row, with the latter to a Portland Fire team made up of role players. It was an embarrassing moment for a team that was supposed to be a championship contender.
The Fire had defeated another championship contender in the form of the New York Liberty. But that game was in front of their ardent fans, and it only happened after Sarah Ashlee Barker lay in the buzzer-beating game-winner.
In comparison, the Fever lost by 16. That was the wake-up call they needed, and they have been playing better. After a win against Angel Reese‘s Atlanta Dream, they lost to the Liberty.
In their last game, they shook off that poor shooting night and took the lead against the Washington Mystics. However, the home team came back to nearly clinch the game.
If not for Clark’s game-clinching three-pointer, the conversation would have been different. Thankfully, the superstar point guard and the other person involved in that play, Sophie Cunningham, drew this play on the fly.
Didn’t Follow the Plan…Won Anyway.

This was the caption to an AI-generated image of the two guards sitting in the locker room and responding to head coach Stephanie White.

They were essentially trolling their coach, suggesting that the two drew up the play on their own and never let White know about it.
Sophie Cunningham clears the air
This picture was the last one in Sophie Cunningham’s latest IG post. But as is expected of fans, they latched on to this particular post, trolling Stephanie White.
Even though teammate Monique Billings enjoyed a laugh, fans felt that this was the veteran guard and Caitlin Clark taking matters into their own hands.
Ever since White and the superstar point guard had an on-court altercation, fans have been creating rumors about the 48-year-old’s lack of coaching ability.
Clark has tried to shut down those narratives, but they keep resurfacing whenever the Fever struggles. Now, Cunningham stepped in to stop this from blowing up.
You guys read too much into things. That’s THE EXACT play our coach drew up, and we executed it perfectly!

The 29-year-old essentially slammed the brakes on theories that she and Clark did not follow White’s game plan. Rather, she made it clear they followed it to a T, showing they did not go rogue.

Cunningham knows all too well how a rumor or opinion can become something big enough to cause trouble. Since such rumors have been running around about her team, it was essential for her to put a stop to them. The
Fever have a home stretch to gain ground in playoff battle
The last time the Fever played the Mystics, the latter won. This time, they evened the score. But they cannot afford to leave games open that late in the fourth quarter, else stronger teams will pounce on them.

Sophie Cunningham, Caitlin Clark, and their teammates will play six of their eight remaining games this month at home. It will be a good opportunity for them to build momentum, as they are slipping away in the playoff race.
They are currently seventh in the standings, but teams below them are catching fire. There is a fear that the Fever will be overtaken if they are not careful.
Moreover, teams above them are also increasing the gap. This is the chance for the Commissioner’s Cup champions to regain lost ground and rise up the table.
