‘I would like to play mixed doubles with Serena Williams in the future,’ says Dominic Thiem
Dominic Thiem and Serena Williams
2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem is not in New York to defend his title. However, the Austrian is making his presence felt from the comfort of his home, via Tennis Channel.
Thiem who ruled himself out of the final Grand Slam of the year with wrist injury has been seen sharing his views on the latest happenings in New York. A few days ago, he was busy in presenting his candid take on the Stefanos Tsitsipas-Andy Murray controversy.
Recently, the 28-year-old was asked to talk about his future aspirations about playing mixed doubles, upon his return to the tour. Without much hesitation, Thiem immediately expressed his desire to play with 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.
“I would chose Serena, because what Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are in the men’s game, she is in the women’s game. Still active and definitely one of the best players to play tennis. And, also she is a superstar, no? Way more than a tennis player. And it would be a great experience to share the court with her. I would also like for her to serve first.”
Serena upsets Thiem in Paris
While it is pleasing to know that the World No.6 Thiem is keen on partnering the legendary American, it is also not to be forgotten that the Austrian wasn’t too happy with Serena a few years ago, in regards to a press conference at Roland Garros in 2019.
The two-time French Open finalist was asked to leave the press room in Paris to accommodate three-time champion Serena. Fuming on the unfair treatment, Thiem told Eurosport German, “It is just the principle. Even if a junior is in there, every player has to wait.”
“It also shows a bad personality in my opinion. I am 100 percent sure (Roger) Federer or (Rafael) Nadal would never do something like that. It’s a joke. I have to leave the room because she’s coming. What the hell, I don’t care. I can also do whatever I want.”
