Roger Federer has made his way to the third round at the ongoing French Open by beating ATP veteran Marin Cilic in four entertaining sets yesterday. The World No. 8 is returning to action after an injury layoff, but seems to be enjoying his time in Paris.

The Swiss hit 47 winners to Cilic’s 43, but could only convert five out of the 16 break points he got. “I had fun today! I was a bit surprised with the way I played because I did not play that much lately. I had ups and downs but I am pleased,” the 39-year-old explained at his post-match interview.

Federer is a former winner at Roland Garros, where he beat Robin Soderling in the finals of 2009 to complete his career Slam. However, the Swiss maestro missed the 2020 edition, and has been very honest about his chances going ahead at this year’s event.

As it is well established that the 20-time Grand Slam champion is coming towards the end of his celebrated career and his best chances to win another Major will be on the lawns of the All England Club.

Moving ahead in the French capital, Federer will now play Dominik Koepfer in the third round tomorrow. Speaking ahead of their match, the German said, “He’s so crafty. He’s so talented. It’s amazing to watch him play. He’s different than all the other players. I hope Roger beats Cilic so I can play him and maybe come out with a win!”

The southpaw is perhaps the first clay court specialist that Federer will be facing at this year’s Championship. Koepfer beat American Taylor Fritz in fourt sets in the previous round and is likely to test Federer in their clash. The two have never met before on the ATP tour.

Given that Federer has played both day games on the Philippe Chartrier, he could be asked to play the night session, or could also find himself playing at Suzanne Lenglen.
