Tokyo Olympics 2020: Elina Svitolina storms into her maiden Olympic semifinal, beats Camila Giorgi

Elina Svitolina

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina hasn’t been in top form all season but the Ukrainian seems to have found her lost form this week in Tokyo, as she cruises into the semifinals of the Olympics. She beat in form Italian Camila Giorgi in straight sets 6-4,6-4 on Wednesday and is all set to make a final 4 appearance at the Olympics for the second time.

Svitolina has been struggling with her court coverage all season, and bowed out of the early rounds at the French Open and Wimbledon. But a resilient Svitolina, who got married to Gael Monfils last week, has shown tremendous character this week. She won all her opening round matches in three sets, which included her coming from a set down to win against Ajla Tomljanovic and Maria Sakkari.

In her match against Giorgi, she wasn’t the overwhelming favorite despite being the 4th seed. But the Ukrainian showed her intentions right from the first set. She was serving well and got an early break of serve. Her return game was solid and soon she stormed off to a 5-1 lead. Giorgi came back strong to win the next three games but it was Svitolina who won the opening set 6-4.

The second set was a bit more easier for Svitolina than the second. She again held serve comfortably and didn’t hand Giorgi a decisive break. She although, got a break of serve for herself and won the second set 6-4 comfortably and marched into the semifinals. She will face either Paula Badosa or Marketa Vondrousova in the last 4.
