What history will Italians Berrettini, Fognini, Sinner and Sonego create at 2021 Wimbledon?
Fabio Fognini, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Berrettini
Over the past few years, Italian tennis has been focusing on producing quality players on the ATP tour as well the juniors. They have also been consistent at the Davis Cup in recent times. In fact, their 2021 ATP Cup win further justifies their depth in men’s tennis.
While Fabio Fognini and Andre Seppi have been playing at the top level for quite a few years, the emergence of young guns- Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Sonego and Lorenzo Musetti have taken Italian tennis to a new high.
Such has been their consistency lately, that all four players Italian players Berrettini, Sinner, Sonego and Fognini will make history at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. It’s the first time that these aforementioned players will be seeded at SW19. Moreover, it is the first time that four Italians will be seeded at the Championships.
Awesome-Foursome for Wimbledon
Matteo Berrettini is currently ranked No.9 in the world and is arguably enjoying his most productive season on the ATP tour. After winning a title in Belgrade on clay, he made the quarterfinals at the French Open. Last week, he also won the Queen’s Club title on grass by beating Cameron Norrie in three gripping sets. He has won five singles title till now. Given his recent run, he is seeded eight at Wimbledon and could make another deep run at the All England Club.
Jannik Sinner is seeded 20th at the Wimbledon Championships. He has been one of the most promising youngsters to show his potential on the ATP tour in 2021. This year Sinner has a 24-12 win/loss record. Although he had a decent time on the clay and hard court, it remains to be seen how much of a damage he can cause on the Lawns of the All England Club.
Lorenzo Sonego is also having a great season too. He won the ATP250 in Cagliari and also made the semifinals of Rome, before going down to World No.1 Novak Djokovic. Will he be able to carry forward his momentum onto the grass courts of Wimbledon?
Fabio Fognini the veteran on the tour has historically struggled on the grass. Although he is talented and has the game to upset the top players on any surface, it is unlikely that he will be able to go deep at the All England Club given his rough history.
