World number one Carlos Alcaraz has made it to the fourth round at the ongoing 2023 French Open and is all set to face 17th-seed Lorenzo Musetti on Sunday. However, prior to the clash, the Spaniard recalled playing tournaments with the Italian when they were kids.

Alcaraz said that last year as Musetti defeated him, he is going to take revenge now. At the 2022 German Open, both Musetti and Alcaraz clashed in the final and the former emerged victorious 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

I was watching him before my match. He won minutes before I started playing. I know him very well. We played a lot of tournaments when we were kids. We played last year. He beat me. I’m going to take revenge now,” Alcaraz said at the press conference before his match against Musetti. The Spaniard called that Hamburg match a really tough one and that is the reason why he is looking forward to squaring off against Musetti.

Musetti faced a tough opponent in the previous round but he easily defeated Cameron Norrie 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round. Notably, Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti have met each other just once, at the aforementioned tournament in Germany and Sunday’s match will be their second encounter on clay.

In the third round, Carlos Alcaraz breezed past Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to inch closer to his maiden French Open title. Last year, Alexander Zverev put an end to the Spaniard’s Roland Garros campaign in the quarterfinal.

In that press conference, Alcaraz claimed he is a “complete player” after he was asked what is his strongest point as a player. He also said that he pushes the opponent to the limit every time.

Needless to say, the Spaniard is destined to be one of the greatest players of all time. Though the world number one has impressed many with his aggressive game on the red dirt, he slowly emerged as an all-court player, with a 24-7 win-loss record at major tournaments.

Notably, the 20-year-old is the youngest top-seed player at Roland Garros since Bjorn Borg (in 1976). Last year, at the age of 19, he became the youngest number-one player after he clinched his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open.
