Iga Swiatek made a surprising decision to withdraw from the Miami Open and Billie Jean King on Wednesday. The world number one revealed that she had suffered a rib injury which was triggered by a violent coughing episode. The Pole posted a message on her social message, ensuring fans that she would be back stronger than ever.

Iga Swiatek competed at the Indian Wells Open last week, where she was defeated by Elena Rybakina in the finals in straight sets. The three-time Grand Slam champion revealed that she had been struggling with this injury since a while, and a final decision was made by her team prior to the Miami Open.

Iga Swiatek is expected to return in time for the clay court season which starts next month. The Pole already has two French Open titles to her name, and enjoyed a dominant clay court season last time around.

Iga Swiatek won the Miami Open title last year, after defeating Naomi Osaka in the finals in straight sets. The second seed won the title without dropping a single set, as she extended her winning streak to 17 matches. The world number one is expected to return for Stuttgart Open in mid-April, as she begins her quest to win her third French Open title.
