“He knows how it works,” Alexander Zverev looking for valuable inputs from out-of-prison Boris Becker
Alexander Zverev has advocated for further embracing of Boris Becker in German tennis.
Alexander Zverev, Boris Becker
German tennis player Alexander Zverev has come out in support of an even bigger acceptance of Boris Becker who was released after serving time in prison. Zverev believes that the former World No. 1 can play an important role in German tennis given his vast experience.
The 55-year-old Becker was sentenced to two and half years after being convicted in a tax evasion case in the UK where he was residing since 2012. After his early release, thanks to UK’s Early Removal Scheme, he was deported to Germany. Becker was declared bankrupt in June 2017 and he was legally obligated to disclose all of his assets so they could be used to pay his creditors. But, he failed to do so.
After living in infamy for some time, Boris was welcomed by the tennis community upon his release. He returned to his role as a consultant at Eurosport during the 2023 Australian Open. Now his compatriot, Zverev has advocated further embracing Becker in German tennis.
“Boris’ help can always be needed, whether you are a player, a coach, the Federation, or whatever. He knows how it works. For sure, he is very important for German tennis and we will always accept his help,” Zverev said. Boris could also soon join the German Tennis Federation.
Alexander Zverev got acquitted by the ATP of the domestic abuse charges
The 25-year-old received some good news off the court recently. The beleaguered German was acquitted by the ATP as the tennis body decided to take no action against him due to a lack of sufficient evidence. The case involved his former girlfriend, Olga Sharypova, who accused Zverev of being emotionally and physically abusive during their relationship.
“Based on a lack of reliable evidence and eyewitness reports, in addition to conflicting statements by Sharapova, Zverev, and other interviewees, the investigation was unable to substantiate the allegations of abuse, or determine that violations of ATP’s on-site offenses or player major offenses rules took place,” ATP said in a statement.
Zverev thanked the ATP after the decision. “From the beginning, I have maintained my innocence and denied the baseless allegations made against me,” Zverev said. “I welcomed and fully cooperated with the ATP’s investigation and am grateful for the organization’s time and attention in this matter.”
