British sensation Emma Raducanu gained popularity when she clinched the 2021 US Open at the age of 18. She had gone on to create history by winning it as a qualifier in the Open Era. But she failed to impress everyone with her underwhelming performances throughout the season. Ahead of the start of 2023, the 20-year-old confesses that the feeling of competitiveness gives the much-needed motivation.

She had been consistently bothered with a wrist injury that led to an abrupt end to her season. Her best performance of the season has been at the Korea Open where she reached the semifinals but had to retire mid-match due to an injury. The former World No 10 even failed to defend her US Open title which took a toll on her rankings. She started the year as World No.10 but eventually finished the year out of the Top 50 in the WTA rankings.

World No 76 said during an interview that “I like to work hard, whatever it is, whether it’s school or tennis, I like the feeling of doing my best. That feeling when you think you’re at your limit and you’re pushing yourself a little further. The benefits you get are really worth it, it gives me a lot of satisfaction. Also the competitive element, I’m very competitive and when it’s tight when nobody really knows what’s going to happen, the suspense, the adrenaline… It’s addictive.

The Brit had failed to pass the second round at all the Grand Slam events of the year despite holding the Open Era record for the fewest majors played before winning a title. Emma Raducanu’s controversial decision-making in keeping a coach for a long time also contributed to inconsistency in her results as she ended the season without a single qualification in the finals. She ended her association with four coaches in the last fifteen months. She is featured in the entry list for the 2023 Australian Open but is the unseeded player at the tournament.

Emma Raducanu finally received her Member of British Empire badge at a ceremony organized at Windsor Castle where she was honored by the current British monarch, King Charles III. She had been appointed as an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honors by then-British Queen Elizabeth for her outstanding triumph in the US Open in the year 2021.

Despite failing to perform consistently on the WTA Tour, it didn’t affect her overall earnings of the year. The 2021 US Open champion earned a whopping £22.8 million between the month of May 2021 to May 2022. Endorsements and brands comprised a major fragment of her major earnings. Emma Raducanu only earned £2.8 million with her performances on the court within this period.
