“Seems you wanna be like Margaret Court,” Martina Navratilova bashed for negative comments on Nike’s endorsement deal with trans influencer
Navratilova is under fire, yet again, for stating transphobic remarks on Dylan Mulvaney's campaign with Nike
Martina Navratilova is known for being a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. However, her recent remarks speak otherwise. The eighteen-time Grand Slam champion criticized the sports brand, Nike, in a recent tweet. Nike has been targeted for taking on trans influencer, Dylan Mulvaney in their latest campaign.
The endorsement deal has been heavily slammed by the public as well as many celebrities. Navratilova also joined the bandwagon to disapprove of the advert. The American was bombarded with negative comments for her stance on the matter. Despite being a part of the LGBTQ community, Navratilova hurt many sentiments with her statement.
Navratilova has always been adamant about her socio-political views. Considering her previous statements regarding trans athletes, her opinion on this latest controversy is not unusual. Nike came under fire in a recent controversy specifically because of collaborating with Mulvaney instead of a cis-gender woman.
While many were supportive, the company also faced a lot of hate. Arguments ranged from transphobic comments to the apparent ‘lack’ of cis-women endorsed by the sports brand. Navratilova stated in her tweet, “I guess Nike couldn’t find a female athlete to sell sports bras…“. Ironically, Renee Richards, who is transgender, coached Navratilova to win two Grand Slam titles.
Some of the comments under the tweet admonished the icon for ‘tarnishing her legacy’. Others condemned her for being a TERF, a term used to refer to radical feminist but trans-exclusive folk. Navratilova has previously commented on trans athletes as well. Below are some of the reactions to her statement:
