Russia’s 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who has made her Grand Slam debut at the ongoing Roland Garros, narrowly avoided being kicked out of the tournament after she deliberately fired a shot at the crowd out of frustration during her match against Coco Gauff. In the third round on Court Suzanne Lenglen on Saturday (June 3), the teenager was given a code violation, and had the ball hit a spectator, she could have been disqualified from the tournament even before losing the match to Gauff in three sets.

Andreeva missed two chances to win the first tiebreak owing to which she smashed the ball toward the crowd, before winning the first set. Though the Russian played remarkably well against the 19-year-old Gauff, she couldn’t secure the win over her. Gauf knocked out Andreeva 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the fourth round where she will face Anna Karolina Schmiedlova tomorrow.

After the match, Andreeva admitted that her “stupid” move couldn’t help her win the match, accepting that it was a bad thing what she did. Gauf also, after the match, cited her own example and backed Andreeva, saying that the 16-year-old will learn from it.

Right after I thought that it was a really stupid move from me, because it was not necessary to do that. Yes, so that was not the best I could do and not the best. It was really bad what I did. Yes, I thought I was going to get defaulted but he just gave me a warning,” the 16-year-old qualifier said after the match.

Notably, Novak Djokovic got disqualified from the 2020 US Open after hitting a lineswoman out of frustration during the first set against Pablo Carreno Busta. But thankfully, Mirra Andreeva avoided that, but in one area, she wants to emulate Djokovic. Well, she wants to win more Grand Slams than the Serb who has clinched 22 titles and is tied with Rafael Nadal.

The dream: I know that Djokovic he did 22 Grand Slams, so I want to go until 25 if it will be possible,” the Russian teen talked about her ambitions earlier this week at a post-match conference.

Meanwhile, Andreeva started her French Open campaign after straights set win over Polina Kudermetova, Emiliana Arango, and Camila Osorio in the qualifiers. She then eased past Alison Riske-Amritraj and Diane Parry in the first and second rounds, before her defeat to Gauff.
