Serena Williams and Tiger Woods
Tennis icon and 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams delayed her retirement by stunning World No.2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the 2022 US Open on Wednesday night in front of a packed Arthur Ashe crowd. Williams won the match in three sets 7-6(4),2-6,6-2 and registered a 108th match win at Flushing Meadows.
Assuming it could’ve been Serena’s last professional match, thousands of fans and some eminent celebrities showed up to watch her play and she surely didn’t disappoint. Golfing legend Tiger Woods was present in Serena’s box and was seen rooting for her. Woods was fully engrossed in the match and looked very animated seeing his close friend giving it all on the court.
Woods even lauded Serena after the match and said that it was a privilege to watch her compete. “It was a privilege to watch greatness. Congrats,” Woods wrote on Twitter.
Later, Williams acknowledged Woods’ overwhelming support and revealed that he is one of the main reasons she is still playing. She said that they talked in detail about her career with him and he tried to motivate her to get back on the tour.
“Yeah, he’s one of the reasons I’m here, one of the main reasons I’m still playing,” Serena Williams said. “So we talked a lot. He was really trying to get me motivated. There are a few people, but we were like, ‘Okay, we can do this together,’ you know?”
Playing doubles with her sister Venus Williams, Serena bowed out of the first round and will now play her third-round singles match against Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday night.
Serena Williams reveals how Tiger Woods gave her clarity
Before announcing her retirement, Serena had a lot of doubts about herself and where she stood in life. She kind of got excited while talking about Woods and said that it was really helpful to get clarity about what she wants going ahead.
She said: “I didn’t know what I wanted to do … was just lost, so many questions. When you can rely on someone like that, I mean — my goodness, he’s Tiger Woods — it was really helpful to get clarity.”
