Matteo Berrettini vs Filip Krajinovic: Preview

Matteo Berrettini started the season well with a solid semifinal outing at the Australian Open where he lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. He reached the quarterfinals of the Rio Open but didn’t do well in the tournaments that followed- Acapulco and Indian Wells. Berrettini then suffered an injury blow which ruled him out of the clay season. He returned to tour last week at Stuttgart and won the title by beating Andy Murray in the final.

In Halle this week where he is the defending champion, he defeated Dan Evans and Denis Kudla in the first two rounds before knocking out Tommy Paul in the quarterfinal. He eased past Botic van de Zandschulp in the semifinal in straight sets 6-4,6-3 to reach his second consecutive tour final.

Serbian Filip Krajinovic has had a very poor season so far until this week. He bowed out of the opening round of the Australian Open and then reached the semifinal of Open Sud de France- his best result of the season. He then was knocked out of early rounds at Rotterdam, Dubai, Indian Wells, and Miami, and didn’t do well on clay either which is supposed to be his best surface. He made it to the third round of the French Open where he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Except Wimbledon, Krajinovic had never played any grass-court tournament because he doesn’t like the surface but he decided to enter Queen’s. This week, he defeated the likes of Jenson Brooksby, Sam Querrey, and Ryan Peniston in the early rounds before beating 7th seed Marin Cilic in the semifinals in straight sets 6-3,6-3 to reach his maiden tour final on grass.

Berrettini will go in the match as a huge favorite. He is one of the best grass-court players in the world currently. He is 8-0 on grass this season, 19-1 since 2021, and 30-3 since 2019. He looks as fit as ever and is serving as a dream. Krajinovic will have to defend for his life if he wants to get anywhere close to beating the Italian and win his maiden tour title. Expect a good match with lots of big rallies, and Berrettini eventually defending his title.

Prediction: Berrettini to win in straight sets.
