Daria Kasatkina has always been highly regarded as one of the bravest tennis players of all time for her public stance against the Russian government. Former Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky has now praised the Russian No. 1 player for her fearlessness in his recent interview and pointed out how the tennis world has not been fair to the ones who took a stand against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Daria Kasatkina was one of the very few Russian sportspeople who took a strong stand against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year when the situation was at its peak. She also came out of the closet, announcing that she was a lesbian at the same time.
Recently, Daria revealed that she chose exactly that timing to make this big announcement with a rebel mentality in mind, and that shows how brave the former World No. 8 is. She has also spoken out against the regressive policies that the nation has against the LGBTQ+ community. Daria Kasatkina is not based in Russia currently.
“She’s got bigger balls than all the Russian male players combined,” he said, taking a dig at Russian players like Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev. “She did something incredibly brave. I incredibly admire her.”
“She was always a great tennis player, a talented one. She always played a style of tennis that was different from [others] but when I heard the interview she gave, I was honestly blown away. I deeply respect her for what she did and what she said,” continued.
Daria Kasatkina faces Sofia Kenin in Round 2 of US Open 2023

Daria Kasatkina beat Alycia Parks in the first round of the ongoing US Open 2023, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. She will now face the USA’s very own Sofia Kenin, who has a career-high ranking of World No. 4. Sofia became the youngest woman to win a Grand Slam since 2002, after her triumph at the Australian Open 2020. However, she has now fallen off and has a ranking of World No. 101.
Daria, too, has had a bunch of disappointing results this season and will look to improve her performance in the ongoing tournament with a positive result. It is important to note that Daria is currently not being allowed to play under the Russian flag by the WTA.
