Three-time Grand Slam champion, Andy Murray, recently played an impeccable match in the 2023 Australian Open. The Scot played two consecutive five-set games but failed to advance past the third round in Melbourne. Despite being plagued by injuries for the last few years, Murray made an exceptional comeback as a former Australian Open champion.
Monica Puig spoke to Sky Sports about Andy’s convictions regarding his career. She was impressed by Murray’s performance in Melbourne as well as his determination to prove people wrong. Murray has been adamant about proving that his career is not over, despite consecutive injuries. The player did exactly that by winning the longest match of his career against Thanasi Kokkinakis.
“Andy has something to prove every time he goes on the court because the amount of times people have counted him out, said that physically he’s not going to endure the rigours of professional tennis again. Having something to prove definitely works for him.” Puig said. According to Puig, irrespective of others’ opinions, Murray has been playing with intentions to play for as long as possible.
Speculations about Murray’s retirement have been going rounds ever since the 35-year-old’s constant injuries. Moreover, his age significantly contributes to the fact.
However, these speculations also motivate Andy to play more aggressively. Even Murray himself has the same opinions as Puig, as observed by his tweet about bumping into his old doctor, who told him his career was over in 2017. Puig recounted the tale, saying, “He was like ‘aha!’ so it’s like he wants to prove he still has it, that he’s still got it and he’s proving that day in, day out and that goes to show that hard work does pay off.” She

Monica Puig commends Andy Murray’s ‘strong character’ and ‘mental strength’

Monica Puig expressed her support for the two-time Wimbledon champion and his chances to win in London again. She elaborated that it doesn’t matter how well a player feels, physically. The problem was with the amount of effort put into winning and working hard. Puig also explained that Murray’s retirement is not as important as his current performance.
“It doesn’t matter about your level – how you feel physically. You put in the work and you will see the rewards and I feel that he is doing that really well. We do not know how many more years he’s going to play but he’s making every moment that he steps onto the court count.” Puig said.
She also commended the player’s mindset and his ever-present confidence. Puig also believes Andy’s winning record and extensive experience will enable him to play better as he tries to come back to full form. Two consecutive Olympic gold medals and three Grand Slam titles definitely warrant more from the former World No 1.
