Rafael Nadal’s former coach, Toni Nadal, has praised American tennis player Coco Gauff for silencing her haters by winning the 2023 US Open. She won the first Grand Slam of her career in the tournament by beating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final as she came back from a set behind.
“I’m glad that through tenacity, work, and education, she was able to take away their reason. I don’t know her personally, but seeing her celebration full of emotion and, at the same time, far from the shrillness of today’s dramatic world, she seems to me to be a very sensible sportswoman,” said Toni.
The 62-year-old also said that he liked Coco Gauff’s statements from her Press conference, where she downplayed the pressure she was under. Coco agreed that she feels pressure and that some nerves come with it but she also feels lucky to be able to successfully dedicate her life to doing what she loves so much, unlike people who struggle to make ends meet and pay their bills. Toni Nadal appreciated the maturity of Coco Gauff’s statement.
Coco Gauff has been in sensational form throughout this season. She first won the Citi Open a few months ago and right ahead of the US Open, she also won the Cincinnati Masters. Thus, she has won a 500, a 1000, and a Grand Slam in the same season now, which is commendable given she is just nineteen.
