Daniil Medvedev is never far away from a controversial moment when is on the court. The Russian was engaged in a tussle with the crowd during his shocking first-round defeat at the 2023 French Open. The second seed was defeated by Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild in a fierce five-set encounter in the opening round.
In one of the heated moments of the match, Daniil Medvedev was seen arguing with the chair umpire over a close call. The umpire was convinced that the ball was inside the line, much to Medvedev’s dismay. The crowd got involved in the whole scenario as well and started booing the 2021 US Open champion.
Daniil Medvedev was quick to react to the boos from the crowd, suggesting them to keep quiet, and let him have a discussion with the chair umpire. The Russian’s exit from the first round of the French Open certainly comes as a huge surprise, given that he was expected to at least reach the semifinals.
Daniil Medvedev faces surprise first round exit at 2023 French Open
Daniil Medvedev came into the 2023 French Open on the back of his first-ever clay court title on the ATP Tour. The world number two had recently claimed the Italian Masters title, and he was expected to be among the leading contenders for the Roland Garros this year.
The first couple of sets were closely contested, as the Brazilian got the better of Daniil Medvedev in the first set tiebreaker. However, the Russian held his nerve in the second set tiebreaker, as he drew level with his opponent. The second seed had gained a strong foothold in the match, as he won the third set without breaking much sweat.
However, Thiago Seyboth Wild had other plans, as he forced the game into the deciding set. The Brazilian held his nerve in the final set, as he has probably caused the upset of the tournament. Daniil Medvedev will certainly be disappointed with this result, given that he had finally started to gain some good results on a surface where he has never quite settled in.
