Serena Williams, Bill Clinton, and Dr. Ruth Westheimer
American legend Serena Williams took center stage on the first day of the 2022 US Open in what many assumed would be the last professional match of her career. Serena announced a few weeks ago that she will be retiring from the sport after the US Open. In her first-round match, she defeated Danka Kovinic in straight sets 6-3,6-3 to delay her retirement by at least one match.a
To witness the legendary American for one last time, thousands of fans including some eminent celebrities and personalities showed up at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night. Former President Bill Clinton was also present to witness Serena kick off her farewell on Ashe.
Apart from Clinton, other notable names present inside Ashe included actress Rebel Wilson, journalist Anna Wintour, boxer Mike Tyson, Hugh Jackman, designer Vera Wang, Olympian Lindsey Vonn, actress Sela Ward and tennis icon Martina Navratilova.
But the highlight amongst the guests was Bill Clinton, who got renowned sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer as his date. This odd pairing was spotted for the first time and many wondered what they were doing together watching a tennis match. When cameras turned towards them during the first set, Dr. Ruth was seen telling Clinton something that turned his face red. They were seen having a playfully fun time and Dr. Ruth even gave the former President a playful slap on the face.
Serena Williams starts her farewell tournament positively
While many believed that Serena would lose the opening round given her poor form, she proved everyone wrong and defeated Kovinic in straight sets. She will now have a big hurdle in front of her in the second round- the No.2 seed Anett Kontaveit. While Kontaveit may not be in good form either, she is the current World No.2 and will start as the favorite. It will be interesting to see whether Serena manages to stun Kontaveit or if this match will turn out to be her last professional match.
