Despite making a bunch of unforced errors in the opening round, the Greek managed to beat the Ukrainian qualifier Katarina Zavatska 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 29 minutes. She came into the French Open with five wins on the clay in 2021, but her premature exits in the recent tournaments have been disappointing. After a stellar time on the hard court, where she made a deep run in Melbourne, Doha and Miami, she has failed to carry the momentum on the clay. The 25-year-old will be eyeing to get past the third round of Roland Garros for the first time in her career.
On the other hand, the Italian Paolini entered the main draw on the back of Simona Halep’s withdrawal from the competition. She beat Stefanie Voegele 7-5, 6-1 in the first round. The 25-year-old has played 10 matches on the clay this season, but most of it has come in the WTA 125k tournaments. Besides she has only been a qualifier, exiting in the early rounds. It would be a surprise to many if Paolini books her place in the third round of this year’s Roland Garros.
