It seems Novak Djokovic just can’t catch a breath. The Serbian who earlier pulled out of the 2022 ATP Cup but then shortly gave joyous news to his fans that he will be indeed playing at the 2022 Australian Open as he has got the medical exemption to enter Australia, things did not go as planned.

Djokovic was detained by border security officials at Melbourne airport on landing where he was questioned for nearly 9 hours by the immigration officers who continued to ask him why did he require an exemption and upon not getting a satisfactory answer, the player was put in a federal quarantine hotel as his lawyers took the matter to court.

While the court ruled the case in favour of Novak saying the government’s case was ‘unreasonable‘ and ordered the immediate release of the Serbian along with orders to pay for the court case which is estimated at half a million dollars, Novak’s brother Djordje Djokovic spoke how his brother has been caught in foul Australian politics and how difficult time his family is going through.

“Night without sleep for our whole family, really rough moments. Novak has shown that he is persistent and that he believes in his ideals. He won this fight for the whole world. The Judge has made the right ruling based on facts, but we are receiving info that the Minister is above the court. Novak is in a political whirlwind, the people in Australia are unhappy since they have been locked down basically since the pandemic started.

“It’s definitely politics. What we can do is to let this be known all over social media – they want to capture and lock up Novak again. That’s the last info, we are currently consulting with PRs about our next steps. He is at the moment with his lawyers in the room they were during the hearing, thinking about his options,” said Djordje during his conversation with Serbian media agencies.

Despite winning the court case, Djokovic’s visa lies in the hands of the Australian immigration minister Alex Hawke who is in the power to reject the Serbian’s visa and deny him entry into the country for the next 3 years till 2024. This decision is expected to be the final straw in the case as there is no other way the government can stop him.
