In Short
  • Tom Brady acknowledged Bill Belichick's influence during his commencement speech at Georgetown University.
  • Brady humorously referred to Belichick as a "cranky old coach" while discussing personal challenges.
  • The relationship between Brady and Belichick soured before Brady's departure from the Patriots in 2020.

Tom Brady and Bill Belichick had the NFL in a chokehold for nearly two decades. These two were the primary architects of the most feared dynasty in NFL history, helping the New England Patriots win six Super Bowls.

Even though both hold mutual respect for one another, their time in New England did not end on a positive note. In fact, if rumors are to be believed, then Brady and Belichick had a massive fallout before TB12 left the club.

Even after all those years, Brady seems to hold a grudge against his former mentor. That’s probably the reason why he chose to take a dig at the 74-year-old during his commencement speech at Georgetown University’s business school graduation.

I usually don’t do well with compliments. I had a [head] coach for 20 years [to] tell me how [expletive] I was every day.

The Patriots drafted Brady 199th overall in 2000. He took over as the starter after Drew Bledsoe suffered a season-ending injury. From then on, Brady played for more than two decades for the Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In college, Brady was highly recruited by the Michigan Wolverines. But he had his share of problems at Ann Arbor, too. From being buried in the depth charts to fighting injuries, Brady had every reason to quit and walk away. However, he worked hard and got drafted into the NFL.

After Bledsoe got injured, Belichick gave Brady the starter’s job. In his first year as QB1, Brady won a Super Bowl ring, and two more followed in quick succession. He won three more toward the end of his career in New England.

I want you to challenge yourself with ideas that are uncomfortable and people that push you to be your very best. Even if one of those people is a cranky old coach who cuts the sleeves off his sweatshirt and screams at you all day, ‘Do your job.’ Okay, that’s too specific.

The tension between Brady and Belichick reached its breaking point ahead of the 2020 campaign. Robert Kraft, the Patriots owner, once revealed that Brady cried in the office before requesting a formal release from the club, which Brady later admitted on the Howard Stern Show.

Yeah, I was crying. I’m a very emotional person. … I have a deep caring for the people that I work with.

Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and led the NFC side to Super Bowl glory in his debut season. He played two more campaigns before retiring from football. As things stand, Brady holds the upper hand with seven rings compared to Belichick’s six. However, old Bill won two rings as an assistant coach of the New York Giants in his early days.

Tom Brady emerges as a fashion icon

Despite pushing 50, Brady is still in great shape. He has contemplated making a comeback to football, but that’s very unlikely. So, he recently showed off his skills on the turf of flag football.

Brady also owns a minority share in the Las Vegas Raiders and plays an active role in changing the culture. With the new season around the horizon, Brady will get busy; even so, he found time to make his runway debut at Gucci’s Cruise 2027 “GucciCore” show in New York City.

The NFL’s official Twitter account posted a video of Brady shimmering on the runway while wearing a black leather jacket with matching leather trousers and heavy black boots.

Brady’s new avatar received mixed reactions from the football fraternity. Nevertheless, it’s good to see him finding new hobbies.
