Even after a month, the details surrounding Kyle Shanahan’s car crash remain murky. Independent journalists, like Tony Farmer, have tried their best to get answers out of the Palo Alto police, but haven’t been successful.

On Sunday, Farmer took a drastic step as a final resort. The 49ers expert has launched a petition drive.

Complete transparency is crucial in ensuring public trust and accountability in our law enforcement processes. Access to these materials can provide clarity on the circumstances of the incident, address any public concerns, and uphold the principle that nobody, regardless of status, is above the law. Prompt release of these materials will aid in dispelling rumors, preventing misinformation, and solidifying the trust citizens have in their police forces.

The petition described on Change.org

Farmer also mentioned that Palo Alto PD has a history of working closely with the 49ers. According to ESPN, it was 49ers VP of Security Jeremy Jones who told reporters the crash report wouldn’t be released. Farmer noted that before joining the Niners, Jeremy Jones worked with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years and has close ties to law enforcement.

Please sign this petition to hold the Palo Alto Police Department accountable for transparency in this matter. Your voice matters.

On July 14, a few days before training camp, Kyle Shanahan’s Tesla car collided with another vehicle. The medics admitted the 49ers head coach to a nearby hospital, where the doctors treated the wounds to his face, nose, hand and ribs. The injuries limited him at the start of the 49ers’ training camp.

I’m doing really good. My body feels good. Just got to get this annoying cast off. My ribs feel good, except when I sneeze, and my head feels so much better.

Shanahan told reporters after practice on August 8

In the initial press release, the Palo Alto PD tried to pin the blame on the girl who drove the second vehicle. However, Shanahan later clarified that the accident happened when he took his eyes off the road. The police did not bring any criminal charges against Shanahan.

Did Kyle Shanahan call plays in the 49ers’ first preseason game?

The first of the Niners’ three preseason games was scheduled to kick off Friday, August 14. Fans were worried whether the 46-year-old would be able to assume command of the team that day.

It was relieving to see Shanahan on the sidelines at Levi’s Stadium. But did he call plays for the Niners?

I didn’t call a play last year in preseason, so it really felt the same as last year. I have a lot of confidence in Klay. He does as good of a job as anyone I’ve been around at it. So, nothing new today.

Shanahan told the media after the game

Shanahan let offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak handle the play-calling duties. The Niners rested most of their starters, including quarterback Brock Purdy, TE George Kittle, WR Deebo Samuel, and Mike Evans, and running back Christian McCaffrey.

Adrian Martinez and Kurtis Rourke took snaps under center. The Niners handed 2026 second-round draft pick De’Zhaun Stribling his debut.

For the better part, the Niners looked in control of the game. Patrick Taylor Jr. scored the only touchdown for the NFC side. However, the defense gave up 19 points to Tennessee. The game ended in a 19-13 defeat for the Niners.

Shanahan said that he refrains from calling plays in preseason, and that won’t change for the remaining games.

[I] haven’t been calling plays as much, but I don’t really do that in the preseason anyways… it felt pretty normal, on a pretty normal schedule.

Up next, the Niners travel to SoFi Stadium to face off against the Los Angeles Chargers. They close out their preseason adventure in Sin City against the Las Vegas Raiders.
