Toto Wolff gives major update on Mick Schumacher’s Mercedes future after rumours of Lewis Hamilton getting $50 Mil Ferrari offer

Mick Schumacher’s poor stint with Haas lost him his seat at the end of the 2022 season. After being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg at Haas, Schumacher was announced as Mercedes reserve and test driver. However, team principal Toto Wolff believes the young German will secure a drive for the 2025 season.

Wolff, although eager to find a seat for Schumacher, he does not think the 2024 season is vacant enough. “I would wish for Mick to get a seat as he deserves it, but the situation in 2024 is so unfavourable,” he said. But he is eyeing William’s seat for his reserve driver in the future. “A few doors will open in 2025 and we’ll have to see how the situation develops at Williams. But it’s not easy,” he further continues.

The Mercedes team boss also wants to keep Schumacher’s hunt for a place on the F1 grid as low profile as possible. “We have to be careful because if we support Mick too much, there will then be those who want to make it particularly difficult as they come crawling out of their holes“, he further continues. Amidst rumors of Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari after this year, many suspected Schumacher to fill in the vacant seat. However, Hamilton shows no signs of leaving the Silver Arrows anytime soon.

At the end of the 2022 season, along with Mick Schumacher, Daniel Ricciardo was also one of the drivers axed by his team. Ricciardo was then offered a third driver role with Red Bull. But with the 2024 grid filling up quickly, both are running out of options.

Scuderia Alpha Tauri still needs to confirm their driver lineup, with Nyck DeVries under pressure to set up his performance. Logan Sargeant’s contract with William’s still has not been renewed. Alfa Romeo potentially has a spot vacant for next year, as Zhou Guanyu’s spot is not yet confirmed.

While some drivers have contracts beyond 2024, few terminate at the end of the year itself. With only 12 drivers having their seats confirmed for next year, Schumacher and Toto Wolff both will have their eyes peeled for the remainder of this season.
