The San Francisco 49ers can’t catch a break. Kyle Shanahan’s accident already has the team on edge, and now veteran offensive lineman Trent Williams is being sued by a car company for not paying the due lease money.

Williams, a 15-year vet, is well-respected throughout the NFL. He has earned five All-Pro honors and has attended 12 Pro Bowls during his time in the league (Washington and San Francisco combined).

Williams could easily end up in the Hall of Fame someday. The only piece of silverware missing from his cabinet is a Super Bowl ring. For that reason, he returned for a 16th season.

However, Williams has landed himself in trouble just a few weeks before the new season kicks off. According to a report from TMZ, a car company is suing the 38-year-old for failing to pay his lease on a 2018 Porsche 911 in 2021. Per Spotrac, that year, Williams signed a six-year contract extension worth $138.06 million with the 49ers. It made Williams the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

According to OpenRoad [the Auto Group], Williams agreed to make 48 monthly payments, with the lease expiring August 31, 2025. The company claims Williams made the first two lease payments in August and September 2021 in the total amount of $10,617.26, but hasn’t made a single payment since.

TMZ reported

The company alleged, per TMZ, that Williams may have closed the bank account and sold the car to a third party. The whereabouts of the vehicle remain unclear.

Either way, the company says Williams owes past-due lease payments totaling $244,199.28, as well as additional charges, fees and costs.

TMZ wrote

In 2024, Williams signed a three-year extension worth up to $82.66 million. Williams has earned north of $400 million since his league debut, the first non-quarterback to achieve that margin.

Meanwhile, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan finally opened up about his accident. Shanahan revealed that on July 14, his Tesla car collided with another vehicle after the Autopilot malfunctioned. Shanahan missed the early part of the spring training camp to tend to his injuries.

Trent Williams has been ranked as the 40th best player in the NFL

After roping in his fifth All-Pro and 12th Pro Bowl campaign, Williams has been ranked as the 40th best player in the NFL Top 100 Players list. He joined 49ers teammates tight end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner, and quarterback Brock Purdy.

This marked Williams’ 13th appearance on the NFL Top 100, with his first selection dating back to 2013. Williams actually improved on his last year’s rank. He was ranked 45th in 2025.

Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Williams allowed a 0.6% sack rate in 2025, tied for fifth among left tackles with at least 200 pass block snaps.

Trent Williams wants to make the final years of his contract count

Despite racking up an illustrious NFL career, Trent Williams has yet to taste Super Bowl glory. With just two more years left on his contract, the time is not on his side unless he picks up a couple before retirement.

I wouldn’t say it changed my urgency, but it does change my mind frame a little bit… It could be my last two years. It’s probably the plan.

Williams said in July

The 49ers play three preseason games against the Titans, Chargers, and Raiders. They kick off their 2026 campaign in Australia against rivals the Los Angeles Rams.
