In Short
  • Ty Simpson was selected 13th overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL draft.
  • Rams head coach Sean McVay appeared displeased during the draft, raising speculation about the pick.
  • Ty Simpson expressed excitement about joining the team and received a welcoming message from Matthew Stafford.

Ty Simpson says he did not see the viral press conference after the Los Angeles Rams selected him 13th overall in the recently finished NFL draft. It appeared Rams head coach Sean McVay wasn’t particularly pleased with the pick.

Cameras caught McVay in a very grumpy mood, generating speculation that he perhaps did not want to draft Simpson or a quarterback in the first round. Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN projected the Rams taking Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy, while Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated linked USC wide receiver Makai Lemon to the NFC West franchise.

Simpson, speaking at a WalkUnitedLA fundraising event at Hollywood Park on Saturday, claimed that McVay’s draft night video largely passed him by.

I didn’t really see [the video].

Later, the Rams revealed that McVay, and Simpson met on a few different occasions before the draft. They kept it a secret so that other NFL teams would cool their interest in Simpson.

Did Ty Simpson speak with Matthew Stafford?

McVay admitted that he was a bit grumpy all night because he did not want to disrespect Matthew Stafford‘s standing as the team’s starting quarterback. Football fans in the past have seen Kirk Cousins lose his cool after the Atlanta Falcons kept him in the dark before drafting Michael Penix Jr. in 2024.

Stafford is not only the quarterback but also a leader on and off the field. Making him angry isn’t the right move, more so after capping off an MVP season. Then again, fans feared the worst when Stafford’s wife, Kelly, was the first to text Simpson after the draft. Stafford later sent a message to the Alabama alum. After reading it, the only thing he could do was smile.

It was funny because, of course, [Matthew Stafford] was like, ‘Welcome, man. I’m super pumped. He was like, ‘Loved watching you play, but you played for the wrong jersey’ — because he’s pumping up Georgia.

Stafford attended the University of Georgia, a rival SEC school of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Simpson is cool with it. It’s not something he hasn’t faced before in college.

Simpson spent four years with the Crimson Tide. He backed up former first overall pick Bryce Young and Seattle Seahawk Jalen Milroe before getting the nod to start ahead of the 2025 season. In 15 games, Simpson completed 305 passes from 473 completions for 3567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He further added 93 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground on 90 carries.

An SEC coach said that Simpson is a great fit for the Rams. Stafford doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon, but he’s also 37, and very few signal callers can continue to play at a higher level in the twilight of their career. So, the addition of Simpson is a smart move.

It’s a great fit for him from a system standpoint, and who he’s going to be behind for a year. There’s a lot of similarities with Stafford. The pick was the biggest surprise, a guy who didn’t have a ton of starts, but when he played, he played well.

The Rams are tipped to make a blockbuster trade after

The Athletic’s Rams insider, Nate Atkins, alerts to keep an eye out for McVay to go all in for pass rusher Maxx Crosby in the coming weeks.

I’d also keep an eye on Maxx Crosby. He seems to have mended things with the [Las Vegas] Raiders, after the trade to the [Baltimore] Ravens was reversed, but the organization’s approach could change if the Raiders hit another tough start to a season.

Atkins wrote

Crosby was all set to join the Ravens via trade with the Raiders, receiving a couple of first-round draft picks in return. However, the All-Pro defensive end failed the physical, and the deal collapsed. Crosby is back in Vegas, but for how long, only time will reveal.
