Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards: Winner will be one step away from welterweight title says UFC President Dana White
Nate Diaz and Leon Edwards
Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards takes place this weekend. Diaz will be returning to the UFC after almost 2 years. The Stockton slugger will be facing Edwards in the first ever 5 round non-title fight in the history of the UFC. Such is the presence and aura of Nate Diaz. His opponent is no less either, The Brit is ranked number 3 in the welterweight rankings.
Speaking ahead of UFC 263, in an interview with Submission Radio, UFC President Dana White claimed that number one ranked welterweight contender Colby Covington will be next in line for a title shot. He then said that the winner of the Edwards-Diaz fight will face the winner of Colby Covington vs Kamaru Usman.
‘Whoever wins is next after Colby‘ – Dana White
White was quoted as saying, “Colby is the number one contender. We did the (Jorge) Masvidal fight, (Kamaru) Usman wanted that fight back. Colby Covington, the fight with Colby and Usman is one of the best fight’s I’ve ever seen in my life. He’s the number one contender. It’s the fight to make. Whoever wins is next after Colby.” [via MMA Mania]
Nate Diaz is currently unranked in the UFC. The last time he fought, was in November 2019, against Jorge Masvidal for the BMF title at UFC 244. Having lost the match via. TKO (Doctor Stoppage), Diaz went on a hiatus, and only now he is returning to the Octagon.
Despite being unranked, the California native will be one step away from welterweight greatness, if he manages to see off Edwards, come this weekend.
Edwards, on the other hand, will be looking forward to grabbing the opportunity with both hands. Despite having a winning streak of 8 and not having lost since December 2015, the Brit has been overlooked very often. Hence Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards will be a cracker of a contest.
Who do you think will have their hands raised at UFC 263?
