“I’m going to raise the bar”- Alexander Volkanovski wants to put the entire lightweight division on notice

Alexander Volkanovski is determined to make it to the all-time greatest list and his next venture could quite possibly seal that spot. The reigning featherweight champion of the UFC is eyeing his shot at the double champ status and in his defense, he is not unrealistic for dreaming so.

At UFC 273, Alexander Volkanovski proved to the world that he was levels above any featherweight in his division bar Max Holloway, against whom he had a very close rematch. However, Volkanovski now has a total of three title defenses and believes the featherweight division needs to get better for him to offer another title shot to the contenders.

Volkanovski believes since he wants to stay active in the year 2022 as a fighter, he might have a go at the lightweight title that is currently held by no one. It is fair to say that Alexander would not too ambitious with his move up a weight class. The fighter used to weigh nearly 200lbs when he used to be rugby before he switched sports.

Alex doubled down on his claim of moving up to the lightweight division in a recent interview with Fox Sports Australia, he said, “We’re moving up to lightweight. Again, people are going to be doubting me. I love that.”

He added, “I want to be the underdog and you know I want people to (say), ‘He surely can’t,’ you know, improve and do this and do that. Let’s do it. I want to do it. I want to keep shocking people, keep proving myself and proving my worth and keep doing what I’m doing. I’m going to raise the bar every time I step in there.”

“I think I deserve it. A lot of people are talking about it and want it, so I want to go out and take on that challenge. Right now, there’s a lot of killers in our division. But I want a clear No. 1 guy. You’ve got guys like Emmett, Rodriguez, Arnold Allen, who’s a great dude and a great fighter. It’s going to be a challenge when he’s there. But I think the two guys that are maybe closest are Yair and Josh,” Alex concluded.
