Khabib Nurmagomedov is a name in the world of MMA that no one will start to forget anytime soon – with an indomitable presence in the octagon and a 29-0 record, Nurmagomedov’s footprint on the sport is unparalleled.
Part of what made Nurmagomedov as successful as he is is down to the absolute dominance he showcased in the octagon, and part of it also is down to the grace and humility he displayed out of it. The two put together, make him a fighter’s fighter – what that means is that “The Eagle” is a champion every single MMA practitioner can look up to with reverence.
Despite his indomitability inside the octagon, fans will be shocked to know that “The Eagle”, across his 29 fight long professional MMA career, only lost two rounds. To put that into better perspective – considering he had four title fights out of 29 total fights, it can be safe to assume, that out of around 90 total rounds in his MMA career, the icon only lost a staggering 2!
His first round loss came against the greatest rival Nurmagomedov has ever had, and that is Conor McGregor. In the third round, after having faced multiple strikes from the grappling-based Nurmagomedov, “The Notorious” chose to rally back with multiple jabs and kicks. These strikes didn’t do much damage to Nurmagomedov, but they kept him at a safe distance. What won the Irishman the round, however, was him stuffing three takedown attempts from the Russian. That being said, it would turn out to be fruitless for McGregor, as he was submitted in the fourth round with a rear naked choke.
The second and last round Khabib Nurmagomedov lost in his career
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s career was shortened by his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s untimely passing, and he sought to honour his word to his mother, having promised her that he would never fight again. Despite the promise, Nurmagomedov had already signed to fight Justin Gaethje, and that would serve as the final fight of his career.
In what would be the penultimate round of his career, Justin Gaethje was given a 10-9 by two judges on their scorecards. The reason for this – across the round, “The Highlight” landed venomous strikes to the face of the Russian, which hurt him, but never dazed him in the slightest. After the fight, Gaethje’s power would be compared to a ‘truck’ by Nurmagomedov.
Despite the American’s best efforts, he would be menacingly choked out via a triangle choke in the next round, bringing a bright end to the Russian’s shining career. The two round losses stand out, but what blurs them is the fact that Nurmagomedov doesn’t possess a single defeat – and that, will be his resting legacy.
