“Had no way out of positions” – Chael Sonnen believes Leon Edwards ‘CHEATED’ his way to the title at UFC 278

Chael Sonnen on Leon Edwards win at UFC 278
‘The American Gangster’ Chael Sonnen after retiring from MMA has been a very vocal figure in MMA. He constantly shares his views on recent happenings and weighs on controversial matters through his YouTube channel.
In a recent instalment of the Bad Guy Inc., he shared the controversy surrounding Leon Edwards in his title win over former P4P king Kamaru Usman at UFC 278. Sonnen accused the newly crowned champion of intentionally cheating multiple times during the fight.
The fight was a rematch from 2015, it was for the Welterweight title. Kamaru Usman was a favourite going into the match and was on a 15-fight undefeated streak in the UFC. In the first round, Edwards showed improvements in his game and even took the champion down for the first time in his UFC carrier. Although as the rounds progressed the challenger faded away and Usman started to take over the fight.
Going into the last round it was a clear win for the Champion on the judge’s scorecard. However, in the final minutes of the last round, the challenger landed a head kick that sent the champion straight into oblivion. Just like a movie, Rocky made an unexpected comeback and defeated the P4P king in a very vicious fashion.
Chael Sonnen alleges fence grabbing helped Leon Edwards in the fight
Although a majority of MMA elites and fans were praising Rocky for the vicious KO over the dominant champion. Sonnen doesn’t seem impressed by his performance and alleged him of cheating his way in the fight.
Speaking on his YouTube channel Chael Sonnen, The American Gangster weighed in on the fight stating, “There’s a lot more in Leon versus Usman and nobody spoke of it. Kamaru is apparently too much of a gentleman to, in conjunction with it appears Kamaru is going to get the rematch so there is no need for it. But Leon cheated in that match a whole bunch of times. That is not a headline or a topic that is out there anywhere, I do not want to be the one to bring that to you.”
“I’m a guy that operates in the gray, I’m not giving him a hard time, for the story to be told accurately, nobody’s wanting to touch that. Leon Edwards was frustrated in positions and had no way out of positions to the extent that he cheated repeatedly, not once, not an accident, not the ref didn’t see it… the ref broke the act five or six times. Leon changed the position and got out of the position by cheating three times” The Bad Guy further added.
Sonen concluded by stating, “So now you’re in a fifth round that you never should’ve been in potentially, you take a kick in a fight that you were winning, that you were trying to finish, and you had the position you needed to get said finish and the opponent cheated three times…Leon learned a lot in this fight. When Leon goes to prepare for Kamaru again, he’s going to have some confidence…it’s a strong word to say cheated, but what other word do you want to use?”
