“Why don’t you go to 135,” Chael Sonnen doubles down in subtly convincing Deiveson Figueiredo to leave flyweight division
Chael Sonnen- Deiveson Figueiredo
Chael Sonnen is one staunch man to not favour a fourth title fight between Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo no matter what. Sonnen is a Youtuber with over million subscribers, commentator at a major MMA promotion (Eagle FC), promoter for Submission Underground grappling and sports analyst for ESPN MMA. Formerly an MMA fighter, Sonnen was a multiple time UFC title challenger as well as former semi-finalist for one of Bellator MMA’s Heavyweight Grand Prix tournaments.
This past weekend at UFC 277, with Moreno becoming the interim-UFC flyweight champion by defeating Kai Kara-France in round 3 via TKO, his fourth title fight with undisputed champion Deiveson Figueiredo is set up next for a title unification bout. The two first met back in December 2020 when the fight ended up in draw in Figueiredo’s first title reign. The second fight favoured Moreno via third round submission win making him the new champion. The third fight ended this year in split decision in favour of Figueiredo therefore bringing the belt back to the Brazilian.
Chael Sonnen thinks Brandon Moreno should’ve said Deiveson Figueiredo that he is sick of fighting him
In another video on his Youtube channel, Sonnen talks about how it will be unbearable for him to witness the build up of the fourth title fight between Moreno and Figueiredo. He does so by talking about the face off between Moreno and Figueiredo after Moreno’s fight against Kara-France and then proceeds to indirectly give an advice to Figueiredo to move up a weight class to bantamweight considering the amount of difficulty Figueiredo had in making weight in past.
“There was a number of ways that could’ve done to make this interesting or he could’ve just told him the truth, ‘I’m sick of fighting you but I think I am better than you, this thing is dead god damnit I got a belt you got a belt why don’t you go to 135… go to 135 and get out of the division’… there’s a number of things that could’ve been done with it…”
What do you make of Sonnen’s thoughts and suggestion for Moreno to move up to 135 lbs? Do you think that’s the right decision for Figueiredo for his future? Are you also the one like Sonnen who doesn’t want to see the fourth fight? Who do you think wins if the fourth fight happens irrespective of your wish? Who do you think are the immediate matchups to be made for Figueiredo if he decides to go up to bantamweight?
