Charles Oliveira prepared himself for war at UFC 280 but could not attain victory in the Abu Dhabi PPV card last year. He lost the title bout against Islam Makhachev at UFC 280. Despite the loss, the submission record holder aims to once again compete for the title. Arguably, a tough challenge in Beneil Dariush waits for Oliveira at UFC 289.
Recently, Charles Oliveira answered his turnaround-related question about what fans can expect on the PPV card in Canada. Oliveira’s longest win streak ended on October 22, 2022, against Islam Makhachev. Nevertheless, he hopes to overcome his setback and return to the top of the lightweight division. ‘Do Bronx’ gave a chilling warning to his UFC 289 opponent ahead of the fight.
Charles Oliveira told reporters, “Sincerely, I’m hungry. I’m happy. Everybody that sees me sees how happy I am to be here. I’m hungry, I’m going to go after this guy.” The former Champion added, “I have all the respect in the world for him, but I’m going to go after him. I’m going to hunt him all the time. You want a war? War is coming.”
Beneil Dariush claimed to be a better fighter than the Brazilian submission artist in the grappling department. The winner of the bout can challenge Makhachev for the lightweight title in Abu Dhabi. Dariush will have to overcome the dangerous Oliveira to fight for the title.

Charles Oliveira might not get the title shot according to Islam Makhachev’s coach
Former champion Charles Oliveira desires to compete against Makhachev to avenge his title loss. Reporters asked Oliveira if he learned anything from his last loss, but the former champ had a different answer. ‘Do Bronx’ respected Makhachev as a fighter. He said, “He is a great fighter, all respect to him. He’s a warrior. But I have not watched it, I’m not going to watch it. Simply, it wasn’t me.”
Nevertheless, the former champion’s desire to rematch Islam Makhachev might not happen after all. Makhachev’s coach revealed “I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know if we’ll get Charles even if he does win. It’s all based on what the UFC looks at the algorithm for, who’s gonna get the most money. Charles winning is not gonna be enough.”
At this point, no one knows who can competitively challenge Makhachev in the lightweight division. The Dagestani fighter destroyed Oliveira in their fight and Oliveira dominated the rest of the lightweight division. Hence, the coach does not think UFC would like to book a rematch between Makhachev and Oliveira.
