Former title challenger Kai Kara-France took on Amir Albazzi at UFC on ESPN 46. Kara-France returned to the octagon after a devastating loss to Brandon Moreno at UFC 277. He took a break for almost a year before returning to the octagon. Kai got inspired by his teammate Israel Adesanya before he accepted the fight. He faced another tough challenge in Iraqi fighter Amir Albazzi.

Amir Albazzi joined the UFC in 2020 and amassed a four-fight winning streak before fighting Kara-France. He finished his opponents three times in his four fights, earning the main event fight against Kara-France. The UFC flyweight division has some of the most highly skilled fighters in the top ten rankings. Albazzi could move closer to a title shot with a win over Kara-France. The judges scored a split decision victory in favor of Albazzi.

The first two rounds had Amir Albazzi closing the distance and trying to engage in grappling sequences. However, those rounds could have gone either way on the scorecard. In the third round, Albazzi managed to takedown Kara-France and sank in a rear-naked choke. Nevertheless, The New Zealand-born fighter showcased his ability to escape the toughest situations in the third round. Toward the end of the round, Kai managed to get on top and landed some good ground and pounds to end the round.

In the last ten minutes of the fight, Kai Kara-France started to pressure Albazzi. He managed to use his combinations to get the better of the Iraqi fighter. In the last two rounds, he was the better striker and the more active fighter. However, the judges scored the contest in favor of Albazzi. Two judges scored it for Albazzi, whereas one judged Kai as the winner, resulting in a split-decision win for the Iraqi fighter.

UFC on ESPN 46 featured the flyweight main event between Kai Kara France and Amir Albazzi. It was a back-and-forth competitive fight that ultimately saw Albazzi emerge as the winner in a split decision. Fight fans went on Twitter to express their sentiment about the fight. Amir Albazzi gets the biggest win of his career. However, it will forever be controversial after most fans and analysts score it for Kai-Kara France. Even the commentary team thought the Kara-France won the fight, but the judges disagreed.
