Khabib Nurmagomedov was absent from Islam Makhachev’s corner when Makachev fought Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. This was Makhachev’s toughest fight; many believe he may have lost the fight. In an interview after the fight against Volkanovksi, Makhachev highlighted the importance of Khabib’s advice while cornering.

Islam Makhachev indicated that Khabib’s tips have been essential, and in the past, have contributed to his victory over other opponents. Khabib was instrumental as a coach, enabling Makhachev to win the UFC Lightweight Championship last year at UFC 280. Here is what Makhachev had to say: “100 percent…His tips are very important. How he is in fight, few people in this sport can suggest…” However, Khabib has retired from coaching duties, citing time away from family as the primary reason.

Khabib followed in the footsteps of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, as a phenomenal coach of Dagestani fighters. Makhachev, Ankalaev, Umar and other fighters were winning their fights with Khabib in the corner.

It is not precise to state that Makhachev could not dominate due to the absence of Khabib in his corner. We might probably find out if Makhachev fights Volkanovski again. As of now, Makhachev is without an opponent to defend his Lightweight Championship.

Dana White is open to booking Makhachev vs Volkanovski 2 soon. With the first fight being close, everyone wants to see a second one to determine the best fighter between the two. UFC President Dana White likes the idea but has “one condition.”

Dana White wants to book the title unification bout between Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez for the undisputed featherweight championship before any potential second fight between Makhachev and Volkanovski. A featherweight title fight between Volkanovski and Yair could be announced soon.

Alexander Volkanovski is close to being regarded as the GOAT of featherweights. If he can defend the title against Yair, he will make a strong statement towards claiming the GOAT status in the featherweight division. On the other hand, Yair will look to dethrone Volkanovski and establish his reign at the top.
